Snail mail is stil useful.

Post by Gob »

Washington: Former US president Jimmy Carter has admitted he uses snail mail to evade monitoring by the National Security Agency and that he feels such surveillance methods have been abused.

"When I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write a letter myself, put it in the post office, and mail it," Mr Carter said with a laugh, as he was questioned on the matter on NBC's Meet the Press program.

"I have felt that my own communications are probably monitored," he said on the Sunday show.

A trove of documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden have sparked outrage in the US and abroad about the vast capabilities of America's intelligence programs.

Officials have defended the methods as necessary to thwart terror attacks but President Barack Obama has ordered reforms in the wake of the disclosures.

Asked whether the programs were necessary, Mr Carter said he thought they had "been extremely liberalised and, I think, abused by our own intelligence agencies".

"I believe if I send an email, it will be monitored," he said.

I sincerely hope so...

The man has a proven record for being a menace to US security interests; he's a one man international wrecking ball, it would be imprudent for any US Administration not to keep tabs on him...

If for no other reason than to know where he's threatening to go next...

He ought to be at the top of the "No Fly List"...(not for what he might do on the plane, but for what he'll do once he gets where he's going...)

Jim--I realize you're being facetious (at least I hope you are), but your post shows exactly why the monitoring of personal communications (and the no fly list for that matter) are dangerous. If someone can be targeted because his (or her) opinions are unpopular, or at odds with the current administration, the chance of mischief is greatly enhanced. it's too much power in the hands of a single executive with no oversight.

Big RR I understand yer point but mercenaries (other than those actually hired by the US) have been illegal for a long time even though a president during WWII (but prior to our actual entrance) snubbed his nose at the notion.

So the ability for the US government to control ones world view by action is not new.
