The gender gap in pay appears to be disappearing overall. 'all by itself' Younger women are at ca 90-95% of men's salaries already and the older cohorts continue to go up. Back in the early 1990s the pay of physicians (when equalized for specialty, years of experience, and hours worked) had reached exact parity between the sexes.
I disagree with the author that women's salaries should not be lower if they take time out to have children. With time off they lose touch with changes in their profession, their skill level deteriorates with disuse and their net years experience is stagnant. If a man took time off to spend 5 years mountain-climbing or raising goats I don't think he should expect to make the same as those who worked the whole time.
My ongoing question about this is: Why aren't my Feminist/Leftist friends all looking at this as a sign of success? Which it is. As more and more generations of young women grow up in a society which tells them that they CAN join any profession they want and CAN have any position in society, which are the messages of the original feminist/leftist movement, more and more of them do well and have careers in Law, Medicine, Science, Management &c. and have the financial success which goes with it.
The past 40 years have been a huge victory parade for Feminism against the forces of reaction (like Rush Limbaugh, the Religious right, and the GOP). There is a point where you need to declare victory and move on with your life.
But they can't do this. They are digging in and whining about smaller and smaller stake-issues.
Rube's coarse and oafish analogy between child raising and goat herding not withstanding, (an analogy that only someone who has no children could possibly make) I'm inclined to agree with his central point...
You can't simply look at overall pay averages, (ignoring every other relevant factor) and reach meaningful conclusions...
The only reason the mythical "pay gap" remains in the news is because Democrats are using every strategy they can find to deflect attention away from the incredible failures of this Administration and its minions.
It is not unlike the "demand" that we MUST raise the Minimum Wage RIGHT NOW...even though when Barry was elected the D's had control of the WH and both houses of Congress and could have done it with no Republican votes whatsoever. Wasn't it important then? Why not?
And the Republicans' "War on Wimmin."
