That just says it all.In effect, through their behavior over the last thirty years, the other NBA owners essentially told Sterling, “Everything would have been fine if you would have just kept your mouth shut. But now you’re messing with our money, and if there’s one thing rich, white guys don’t like, it’s other people messing with their money.”

Re: Another Racist Moron...
I should have highlighted this part of my second quote above; I'll do it now:
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

Re: Another Racist Moron...
I don't think that's limited to rich white guys....
Racist
(That enough emoticons to convey I'm not being serious on that accusation?)
Racist
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: Another Racist Moron...
Yeah!! Why did you do that?
Re: Another Racist Moron...
CP, I think you owe Econo an apology...
ETA:
Don't worry Econo, even though CP thinks you're a racist I'm pretty sure that nobody else here does...

Re: Another Racist Moron...
Racist accusations are alive and well at Plan B.
I'm so disappointed in Crackpot.
I'm so disappointed in Crackpot.
Re: Another Racist Moron...
I'd really hoped we'd put those sorts of ugly smears behind us...
Apparently not...
Apparently not...

Re: Another Racist Moron...
Maybe we can all try to set a good example for Crackpot that he will understand and accept so he will not pass on his false accusatory tendencies to his offspring.
Re: Another Racist Moron...
you two enjoying yourselves?
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: Another Racist Moron...
Hey, don't get snippy with us...
We're not the ones who called somebody a racist...

I'm still sulking since Josephato called me a moron. And just stupid. And wrong.
But I feel better now that I realize he could have called me a racist, but didn't. So thanks for that, Crackpot.

Anyway, returning to the original discussion, (which was derailed by Crackpot's unfortunate "racist" accusation against Econo; that was ugly... hopefully he won't do that sort of thing again...)
Kareem makes some arguable points, (and I can understand his anger) but some context is in order:
I watched NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's press conference, where he put the hammer down invoking every power he had available to him against Sterling, and also announcing that he would fight to have him forced to sell the team; only 72 hours after the story broke.
He was asked about the earlier Sterling record on race matters (which was something less than sterling) and he made very valid points:
Prior to the release of this conversation, what there was in the record was one lawsuit that was settled with no admission of guilt, and another lawsuit that had failed, (Elgin Baylor's) and a lot of talk which amounted to no more than hearsay...
Based on that, how could it possibly have been considered reasonable for the NBA to act to remove a franchise owner?
(BTW, I thought Silver's performance in that press conference was masterful, from beginning to end. By publicly announcing that he was going to pursue a forced sale of the team, he pretty much guaranteed he would get the votes)
Second point:
Kareem (and others) seem to be suggesting that there's something untoward or hypocritical about the NBA acting now as a business enterprise, to protect it's interests as a business enterprise...
What's wrong with that? That's what businesses are supposed to do, and if flagrant racism of this sort now threatens the financial well being of the business enterprise, such that action has to be taken, one would think that would represent progress on the race front, from a societal point of view...
Third point:
Let's not forget that the LA Chapter of The NAACP had already given Sterling an award in 2009, and was cued up to give him a "Lifetime Achievement Award" next month...
(Paradoxically Sterling was considered the most "minority friendly" major sport franchise owner in LA; he provided thousands of Clippers game tickets for inner city-youth in LA for every game, and donated millions of dollars every year to charities for urban youth...)
It seems very improbable to me that the honchos at the LA NAACP would have been unaware of the discrimination suit settlement...
But it seems absolutely inconceivable to me that they were unaware of the Elgin Baylor suit...
And yet they gave this guy one award, and were prepared to give him another...
Why should the National Basketball Association, which (legitimately) exists primarily as a business enterprise, be held to a higher standard regarding racism then The NAACP, which exists primarily for the purpose of combating racism?
Talk about hypocrisy...
