San Francisco man sought by FBI active in political circles

SAN FRANCISCO —

An FBI spokesman announced Sunday afternoon that 42-year-old San Francisco resident Ryan Chamberlain is being sought in a federal investigation for possession of explosive materials and should be considered armed and dangerous.

RAW: FBI agent talks about explosives suspect being sought

FBI agent Peter Lee said that Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II is the man who lives in the apartment building on Jackson Street in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood that was the focus of Saturday's FBI operation that closed off the block for 15 hours.

Chamberlain is described as 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing approximately 225 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Lee said Chamberlain was last seen south of San Francisco wearing a navy blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans driving white 2008 Nissan Altima. The vehicle is registered in Texas and may have a California or Texas license plates of either 7FQY085 or BX9M042.

During the news briefing outside of the FBI's San Francisco office, Lee said that reports that Chamberlain may have had poisonous Ricin at his apartment were not true. He also confirmed that there was no danger of chemical or biological agents in what was found at his residence.

Jackson Street reopens in San Francisco after FBI search wraps

Lee encouraged the public to keep an eye out for Chamberlain and the suspect vehicle and to immediately report any sightings to authorities.

Law enforcement officers throughout the state and nation have been alerted to be on the lookout for the suspect, Lee said at Sunday's news briefing. Lee said that the suspect should be approached with caution if located by police.

"Anyone who possesses explosives should be considered armed and dangerous," he said.

However, the spokesman said, "He has not made any threats that I know of...there is no threat to public safety at this time that we know of."

The block of Jackson Street where the apartment building is located finally reopened early Sunday morning after FBI investigators completed the search and hazmat incident.

Investigators finally left the scene at around 12:30 a.m. after completing their search of an apartment building on Jackson between Van Ness and Polk streets.

An FBI agent confirmed to KTVU that San Francisco resident Chamberlain was being sought in their investigation earlier Sunday morning.

On Sunday, KTVU also spoke to the owner and the manager of the apartment building where Chamberlain lived.

Building owner Martin Harband said Chamberlain rented the ground floor apartment for past two years. Harband said Chamberlain "seemed normal" and gave no outward signs of suspicious behavior.

Harband told KTVU the apartment remained sealed with police tape and off limits. He said he had no idea what the FBI was looking for in their search.

The building manager, who did not want to be identified, told KTVU that the building’s laundry room was also sealed off in the wake of the investigation.

The manager said she last saw Chamberlain two weeks ago at a tenant barbeque, where he gave no indication that anything was wrong.

Neighbor Patricia Barlow has an office next to Chamberlain's apartment and saw him regularly.

"He just didn't seem the type, but never judge a book by cover," said Barlow. "He's very friendly. He's a nice looking fellow. He's quiet -- you always have to start the conversation with him it's never vice versa."

KTVU has learned Chamberlain was involved in sports marketing, taught a semester at University of San Francisco in 2011, and was active in political circles.

"I was shocked. It blew me away," said Howard Epstein, the past chair of the San Francisco Republican Party.

Epstein said he worked with Chamberlain years ago before Chamberlain switched sides and joined the Democratic Party's efforts.

"The only one I know that he worked with after he left the party was Gavin Newsom. He was an organizer when Gavin ran for mayor," said Epstein.

Alex Clemens of Barbary Coast Consulting hired him as a contractor for about a month back in 2009 and has known him through political circles for more than a decade. He described Chamberlain as a competent political operative.

"He worked every cycle on a campaign, or two or three, and you don't survive in the very high stakes of San Francisco politics without being competent," said Clemens.

It's not everyday that you see a 42 year old PR professional being sought on explosives and weapons charges... :?

S.F. man wanted by FBI posts apparent suicide note

(06-02) 09:52 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco political and public relations consultant who prompted a nationwide manhunt this weekend after FBI agents allegedly found explosives at his Polk Street apartment left what appears to be an online suicide note. However, there is no official word on his status.

An automated post by 42-year-old Ryan Chamberlain - which was timed to go out to his Facebook friends Monday morning - provides little insight into why he might be in possession of explosives. But he talks about suffering with depression "for as long as I can recall" and bids farewell to family and friends.

"So much was broken from this past year-and-a-half, and from moments way back before that," the three-page letter states. "I guess it was just insurmountable, and the time's up."

The note, titled "Goodbye," details issues with his mother, who he calls a "religious addict certain that the Rapture is coming any day now," as well as a romantic heartbreak and the loss of a job. He mentions past traumas and disappointments, saying he was denied credit for helping Gavin Newsom during his successful 2003 mayoral campaign.

The FBI said Sunday that Chamberlain is wanted for allegedly possessing explosives in his home, though the agency did not say what the explosives were or what Chamberlain might have wanted to do with them.

More than two dozen federal agents, hazardous materials experts, police and firefighters raided Chamberlain's residence at 1831 Polk Street on Saturday. Chamberlain was not at home at the time.

The story of Chamberlain, a social media expert, had a chilling online component even before the posting of the note, with people sending him Twitter messages over the weekend and scouring his many accounts and websites. Chamberlain suggested in his letter that the FBI may have taken an interest in him due to things he did online.

"I got dark. I got real dark. I explored myriad ways I could put an end to what I was going through," he wrote. "I binged-watched dark TV, sometimes didn't get off the couch for days, and scoured the Internet absorbing fuel for morbid fantasies. Some of that activity seemed to attract the attention of some visitors today ... who have made it rather evident that this is the end of the line for me."

Explaining the format of the note, he wrote, "I've timed this note on a Hootsuite delay, and now it's live, which means I wasn't around to stop it from posting."

On Twitter, some of Chamberlain's friends posted notes to him Monday morning in hopes he would see them.

One wrote, "My heart is breaking for you. Please don't do this. I love you man." Another wrote, "You still have so much to live for and so much life ahead of you. Please come home."

I didn't know about the other stuff, but I found out about the job loss when I read this earlier:
'Got weird' after job loss

In November, he was let go from Project Sport, a San Francisco sports marketing company where he worked with professional athletes.

Randy Bramblett, 32, a professional cyclist and personal trainer in San Francisco, knew Chamberlain through Project Sport and would often get beers with him and others from the company after events.

Bramblett said that Chamberlain was "emotionally charged" and that when he lost his job he "got weird."

"The thing is, there was a lot of strange behavior since November," Bramblett said. "He stopped answering his phone. I think he became an extreme introvert."
http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/Nat ... 520975.php

Now with what's come out it looks like a classic downward mental and emotional spiral...Sad..It also looks like, (similar to Eliot Rodger) the guy's been nursing a lot of grudges for a very long time...

Though from what's been quoted that he wrote, he sounds more depressed and despairing then rage filled, or bent on revenge...

If he has decided to make an end of it, hopefully he will not feel the need to take others with him. (Of course a house full of explosives doesn't bode well in that regard...)

I have to say that if I was either the person who broke up with him, or the one who let him go at Project Sport, I'd probably be thinking that this might be a really good time to get out of town for a few days...

Looks like the guy is still alive:
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Just hours after a “Goodby” letter surfaced from the man at the center of an FBI manhunt and explosives investigation, Ryan Chamberlain apparently returned to social media to deny federal claims that he is armed and dangerous.

“Nothing they’re reporting is true. No “Stashes.” Not “armed and dangerous.” No Car “Rigged to explode.” I explored some ugly websites, a year-ish ago. I was depressed,” Chamberlain told friends on Facebook.

Prior to that note, and an accompanying Twitter message, it was not clear that Chamberlain was still alive after recently disappearing. Over the weekend explosive materials were found during an FBI raid of Chamberlain’s apartment at Polk Street and Van Ness Ave. Earlier Monday, a letter appearing explaining Chamberlain’s state of mind popped up on his Facebook page. That note claimed to be previously written and time-released. It chronicled relationship, financial and emotional troubles he had dealt with in recent years, referring in several instances to the “dark times” he had dealt with.

He is saying that he isn't dangerous and implying that he has nothing to hide, so why doesn't he turn himself in and set the record straight?

Because he's a communist terrorist from Russia, that's why!!!

We need to arrest the guy and have Dick Cheney waterboard him until he tells the truth. Then we need to deprive him of his legal rights and send him to Guantanamo.

Yeah, apparently the FBI filled his apartment with explosives to set him up...

You laugh because you don't know the power of the MOTU. I know their power very well. I used to communicate regularly with a corrupt government agent, who I won't name for security reasons, but I can reveal that he now spends most of his time driving his quad.

Until the evidence is made public, one can't necessarily trust the government's description of what was found in his apartment.

With the level of trust I have (or rather, don't have) in law enforcement these days, I wouldn't put it past them to set up some unsuspecting sap in order to make themselves look good for foiling some non-existent plot.

Long on suggestion and innuendo and very short on facts. Nothing about -finding- weapons or explosives just that they were looking for them.

Authorities said Chamberlain disappeared before FBI agents found explosives during a raid of his apartment at Polk Street and Van Ness Avenue over the weekend.

In any event, they got their man:
Explosives Suspect Ryan Kelly Chamberlain Arrested At San Francisco’s Crissy Field After 3-Day Manhunt

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Ryan Chamberlain II, a man wanted by the FBI in an explosives investigation, was arrested at Crissy Field Monday evening after a three-day manhunt.

FBI spokesman Peter Lee said that authorities found Chamberlain’s car — a white 2008 Nissan Altima with Texas or California license plates — near Crissy Field, south of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Morgan Manos, an Uber driver, was taking a break at Crissy Field when authorities caught up with Chamberlain. He noticed the commotion and took out his phone.

“He was asking for help. He saw that I was recording him and said ‘Help me,’” Manos said.

“They got him on to the ground. They were trying to get him cuffed. They were yelling at him to get one of his arms behind his back. He was complaining that he couldn’t, that he was like hurt or stiff or something,” Manos said.

San Francisco police officers moved Chamberlain to the patrol car. When officers pulled off his beanie, Manos said he saw a little blood on Chamberlain’s face from the struggle.

“There’s a manhunt going on, they’re looking for him. Why would he be down here watching the bridge and the ocean? So I was just surprised the whole thing happened right where I was,” Manos said.

Earlier on Monday, FBI agents and San Francisco Police focused their search in San Francisco’s Lower Haight for Chamberlain.

The bartender at The Mad Dog in the Fog bar at 530 Haight Street told KPIX 5 that FBI agents were in the bar earlier Monday afternoon.

Agents questioned bar staff and informed them Chamberlain was inside the bar around 2 p.m. and got cash out of the ATM. The bartender said that the agents told her that they believed Chamberlain might be at an establishment nearby drinking.

The business owner next door, Devon Chulick, owner of DSF Clothing, told KPIX 5 that FBI agents also asked him if he had seen Chamberlain. Chulick said an agent also informed him that Chamberlain used the ATM at The Mad Dog in the Fog.

FBI agents and SFPD officers talked to possible witnesses and surveyed the area.

He really didn't get very far in 3 days...

A nationwide manhunt going on, and they caught him at Crissy Field which is easy walking distance from his home at Jackson and Polk...

Of course that could mean that the FBI found anything from C4 to firecrackers to some gasoline (perhaps for his model airplanes?) and bottles which could be used for molotov cocktails. I'll wait for the rest of the news.

his apartment at Polk Street and Van Ness Avenue
Gee, that's interesting since Polk St and Van Ness run parallel to each other...(they're only one block apart; the lady who cuts my hair has her shop on California St. between Polk and Van Ness)

Another example of great reporting...

All the other stories I've read and news reports I've seen have his apartment on Jackson St. at Polk (they closed off Jackson St. for hours on Saturday) which is a few blocks closer to The Bay then California St.; you could walk from there to Crissy Field in less than half an hour.

Exactly!

I've heard the street nickname for the FBI is Federal Bureau of Intimidation.

I don't know if Andrew D is posting/lurking here anymore, but he might be pleased to see me post that after almost 4 years serving as an agent of the State, I am pretty much entirely disillusioned by the experience. I now believe that truly good prosecutors - and truly good law enforcement officers - are the minority of both professions.
