Rite of the Sitting Dead

Post by MajGenl.Meade »

Funny title by the NYT... The SA Times came up with "Dead Selfie Society".

Sorry if this has already been posted....

NEW ORLEANS — All last week, people were calling Louis Charbonnet to find out how they might avoid lying down at their funerals. Funeral directors have called; so have people with their own requests, such as the woman who wanted to be seen for the last time standing over her cooking pot.

The calls started coming in to the Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home during its June 12 viewing for Miriam Burbank, who died at 53 and spent her service sitting at a table amid miniature New Orleans Saints helmets, with a can of Busch beer at one hand and a menthol cigarette between her fingers, just as she had spent a good number of her living days.

I refuse to have any more money spent than is necessary to have me cremated.

I agree with @W. Wasting money on fancy caskets and feeding the vultures that turn up to moan and wail about losing a relative that they can't even be arsed to phone once a year is not what I want when I go.

Cheapest cardboard coffin, humanitarian cremation service (I'd prefer resomation if that's up and running by then) and scatter whats left on the North Wales beach I spent much of my childhood on.

The funeral industry preys on people in grief "your dead relative deserves the best send off" type sales tactics that pressure people into spending more than they can afford.

Pre-pay if you can and make your wishes known to your family and friends.

All that plus it's moronic and sick, not mention tasteless and ignorant

I'm so on board for the resomation -- much more carbon neutral than cremation.

But not stupid burial or casket for me either. NO WAKE. Just a big party with the family and friends, some time after. Ashes scattered on one of my beloved beaches.

I want to be buried or cooked. But since the latter will still probably be illegal by the time I die just ant to be dumped in the ground don't much cRe for ceremony or surrounding but I find some sort of comfort to the idea of rotting in the earth.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Gee, I wonder if this discussion could possibly get any cheerier? :D

How about a musical interlude:

I hadn't heard of resomation; for anyone else who is curious about that process: http://www.resomation.com/index.htm

I'd like to be donated to medical science if possible; if they don't want me, or, after they've used me up in Gross Anatomy, I'd like to be cremated (resomation sounds fine and better for the environment) and buried at sea off Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

I think it would be awesome if they could chuck my corpse over the fence at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. I am thinking there are multiple reasons why they won't do that but it would be cool to finish up as dinner for the kitties.

Edited to avoid overfeeding the kitties a corps.

I'd not heard of resomation either, nice to see the Brits getting a jolly fun idea out. :?

As I'm not going to die I don't have to worry about these things though.... :ok

I agree with William Saroyan about dying; in my case I think there will be an exception.

Interesting that the three of them, Gob, Jim, and Rubato, have the exact same response to mortality. It explains sooooo much

Best of luck to all of you!

Yeah, I noticed that yesterday... :?

I may have to re-think my decision to live for all eternity if it means I'm going to have to spend eternity with rubato... :o

Doesn't seem likely:

Regarding the OP...I would be remiss if I didn't mention William M. "Willie the Wimp" Stokes Jr.

I was referring to the William Saroyan quote:
-"Everybody has got to die, but I have always believed an exception would be made in my case. Now what?"
William Saroyan

Which is one of the best epitaphs I know of.

I'm going into space - my family are well aware of my wishes, if I can't get there whilst I'm alive then .000001% of me will get there afterwards  All joking aside these really ARE my wishes and its even in my will.
If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.

Perhaps the executors will consider that eventually the sun will go nova and blast the earth out into space which is much the same thing, and uses less of your estates residue. Less trouble.

I'm just saying.

BUT for $75,000 you can take a trip to the edge of space now! (pretty soon anyway)

If I had $75,000 burning a hole in my pocket, or the knowledge of impending and certain mortality, I'd try it myself.
