Well, soccer actually, but point taken... 8-)

But then this is the fellow who once decided to grind his political axe in a thread about people's Thanksgiving plans, and another time in a thread that had been posted dedicated to the passing of a beloved pet...

Given his track record, it's hardly surprising that he would be such an oaf as to choose to grind his unceasing, predictable, tiresome political axe in a thread about The World Cup...

If we don't win the World Cup, it's Ronald Reagan's fault... :D

Rubato's basic point is correct -- you lot use British when you want, and then go back to the separate national identities when its suit you too. Case in point (and we had this same discussion last summer): Andy Murray is a "Brit" when he won Wimbledon, but he was a "Scottish git" in the earlier years when he crumbled over and over again.

Also, I wanted to add that I realize perhaps the US advancing, in light of England's dismal showing, isn't the worst possible outcome. It's the FRENCH success that really has to sting . . . :nana

Americans do it too Guin, especially in sports; I once worked with a die hard Yankees fan (and one of the reasons I don't like the team) and after each game it was always "We won" or "They lost" depending on how the Yankees did. People always want to jump on the winning bandwagon and distance themselves from the losers.

I can promise you this Long Run, you don't have to worry about that with me (being a Yaks bandwagoneer). Where is that puking smiley . . . .

Longrun?

I would never accuse you of being a Yankees fan, but I think the We/they dichotomy is pretty universal whatever the team.

Kind of like "Our (or even My) son was accepted to Harvard", "Your son Flunked out of school"

I was just about to make the exact same point...

When our kids do something praiseworthy they're "our/my" when they do something, well, not praiseworthy, they're "your"...

I pointed this out to Kelly a few years ago...

" Oh, so that means I get to own the bad behavior?"

To which she replied, "Yes, exactly. Now you've got it"....

(Sarcastic wench...)

But the same was true with my parents, (though they didn't openly discuss it or make a joke out of it like we have) and probably most parents...It's a natural hardwired human impulse to associate oneself with "the good" and try to create psychological distance from "the bad"...

Whether it's our country, our sports teams, or our kids...

We also do a version of this with our pets...

When our pets behave well, we anthropomorphize them and refer to them as "good boys" and "good girls"...

But when they misbehave, we create emotional distance, and they become, "bad dog" and "bad cat"....(or in Max's case, "bad bird")

I've yet to hear of the Scottish team soccer team being called British  that's a nonsense I'm afraid. But lets not let rubato drag another thread back to his Aspergerish obsession...

U.S.A. V. Belgium: 5 Foods Not To Serve At Your World Cup 2014 Watch Party

(CBS SF) — If you were planning a World Cup 2014 watch party for the Team U.S.A. vs. Belgium soccer match on Wednesday (1 p.m. on ESPN) involving waffles drizzled in chocolate, served with a side of trappist bottle-conditioned beer and roasted Brussels sprouts, you may want to rethink that menu.

THE 5 FOODS YOU CANNOT SERVE IF YOU’RE CHEERING FOR TEAM U.S.A.:

1. BELGIAN WAFFLES: That’s a no-brainer, right? Although, maybe you DO want to serve them, and then devour them like Tim Howard is going to devour anything the Belgians kick at him. Just be sure if you do serve them, serve them with raspberry and blueberry syrup, so you can be all red, white, and blue as you eat your opponent for lunch. And, for the food purists out there, we should note that the Belgians don’t eat Belgium waffles. They do enjoy a waffle, sometimes a Brussels Waffle — but you can’t order a Belgium waffle there. It’s just a waffle. And it looks different than the American version named after the country. By the way? You can’t get them at Waffle House either, as they’re organizing a Belgian boycott.

2. BELGIAN BEER: It’s amazing, it’s complex, it’s the caviar of beers, in fact Belgium’s Trappist Westvleteren monastery’s beer is often ranked the best beer in the world. Just don’t serve it during the game. Incidentally, Anheuser-Busch InBev is based in Belgium too, where they really know beer, but try not to hold it against them after the game.

3. BRUSSELS SPROUTS: Everyone hates them anyway, right? Okay, they’re actually not bad when roasted with about 2 pounds of bacon, and maybe it would be fun to eat them as you watch #USA destroy #BEL. Just make sure you explain yourself to your party-goers. Or, never ever serve them again, and remind everyone who hates them that they, like the soccer team that is about to lose, all came from Belgium.

4. FRENCH FRIES WITH MAYONNAISE: Oh, never mind. There’s no chance in hell you would have served that anywhere any time anyway, right?

5. CHOCOLATE: Bonbons, filled chocolate nuggets, liquid-filled chocolates, whatever you call them, these guys made ‘em famous. Also hot chocolate. So, drink an American beer, and skip the hot cocoa until after the game.

When is the USA v. Belgium game? 1 p.m. Pacific Time, 4 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Lucky to get out of that half with half the lead. Sean was right that the Belgians have a fast and fierce attack. Our plan, though, is to lull the opposition into thinking we always send the ball to the wrong shirt and barely get back in time on an attack, until we . . .

It looks just like the other three games we've played...

The opponent controls the ball 90% of the time, gets shot after shot, and yet somehow we're still in it...
