Redskins "racial slur"?
Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
LJ, I agree that the mascots for the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians are far less dignified than the mascot for the a Washington Redskins. Cleveland's mascot is particularly disgusting, as it very much resembles the blackface images of yesteryear.
The Washington mascot/logo wouldn't need to change if the team's name was changed to Warriors, Braves, Indians, Chiefs, or First Americans.
Any of those would be much more acceptable than Redskins.
On a side note, is there any chance you'd be willing to use a smaller Redskins image in your sig line? It makes for a whole lot of unnecessary scrolling.

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
I believe you're being a little deliberately obtuse there Gen'l... Obviously she's referring to the Cleveland Indian symbol, (Like the one that purple what-ever-it-is is wearing on its shirt...) and the old racist black cartoon portrayals...

That was actually the smallest "Hail To The Redskins" image I could find, but I'll look again. On a side note, is there any chance you'd be willing to use a smaller Redskins image in your sig line?

O I C
No, it wasn't deliberately obtuse. I haven't seen that image before. Is that something the baseball team puts out?
ed: OK I get that the side-by-side you imaged wasn't the team thing. We're talking about Chief Wahoo as a symbol in general.
I suppose the name "Cleveland Indians" alone wouldn't be the problem if Wahoo was retired in favour of the simple letter "C" on the shirts etc. (which they have been phasing in since the last ice age I believe). I'd like them to revive the Cleveland Spiders name

Pffft. Everyone knows that the Spiders are from Mars.MajGenl.Meade wrote:I'd like them to revive the Cleveland Spiders name
GAH!
Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
Spiders: almost universally reviled and often squashed. Yep it fits.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
You're confusing them with Yankees?

Ditto! Bravo, Meade!
I actually like spiders a whole lot more than Yankees . . .
eta: Also, I'm sorry for the confusion of 'mascot' with 'logo' or whatever the appropriate term is for the thing on their jerseys and hats. Thanks, LJ, for exactly the comparison I was thinking of.
I've never really understood why for some teams the mascot is so entirely different . . .

LJ. THE REDSKINS LOGO
Same message... less flash. Maybe it's time to downsize.

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
On my screen Ray, that looks almost exactly the same size as the one I've got...I've got no problem with that image, I'd be happy to use it)
But I've book marked it, and I'll check latter to see if it shows up smaller in the sig line...
What I was thinking to do, was to download the one I've got to my computer, then use a software I have to reduce the size, (maybe to 2/3) upload it back to the web and then use the URL location for the down-sized version in my sig line...
But I won't have time to try that until sometime over the weekend...

Just open it in Paint LJ - you can downsize it right on your PC.

The media has lost interest in this, but as sure as night follows day, once the NFL season begins, we'll start to hear about this again....
The quickest way to put an end to it, is to put a winning team on the field...

This image is much nicer, LJ - and it IS much smaller on the mobile device I use - would be much less scrolling.RayThom wrote:Same message... less flash. Maybe it's time to downsize.
Pretty please??

PS - I just thought how cool it would be to call them the Chiefs, with the cheer being 'Hail to the Chiefs' . . . Very presidential and Washingtonian.

Too late, theres' a team from a proper sport by that name;

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
Okay, I changed it, but it really doesn't look smaller to me...

Quite right, they're called The Kansas City Chiefs...Too late, theres' a team from a proper sport by that name

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
If Washington were also called the Chiefs, they could play 'Hail to the Cheif' when the players take the field at start of game.
But then I guess their true mascot would have to be a stuffed shirt windbag disliked by at least half the population at any given time . . .

Re: Redskins "racial slur"?
Another way of looking at it is that discovering that you have, with no harmful intent, offended someone is an opportunity.
It is an opportunity for one sort of person to apologize, learn from the experience, and in the end produce a more harmonious society. By admitting the fault of limited understanding, which is surely universal, they have become better and more capable people. By admitting their fault to the injured party they have created the possibility of unity and synchrony with the other community.
Or, it is an opportunity for someone with an abnormally small penis to say "Fuck You, waddayougonnadoabboutit mook?" Because some people are ridden hard by the awareness of their own inadequacy and failure.
Opportunities are what we make of them. What they reveal about us. And make us into.
