Re: No Laughing Matter...
Not to mention the Mormons, with their magic underwear...Lord Jim wrote:There are a number of conservative Christian sects that mandate modest and even "uniform" type dress for their female members...and sometimes male members too (like the Amish)Pentacostals have a female "uniform".
True. Perhaps I should have used the word "theocracy" instead of--or in addition to--the word "fundamentalism" in my "correction" above.Lord Jim wrote:The big difference is they don't have the power of the state to back them up and force every woman to adhere to their dress codes whether they want to or not, under penalty of criminal punishment...
ETA: on second thought, religious fundamentalism--with or without state power behind it--really is the problem. Just look at the Buddhist fundamentalist violence against Muslims in Burma/Myanmar for a surprising (and depressing) example.
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

extremist would be best. Fundamentalist really only means adherent to core beliefs. while all extremists would claim (at least) to be fundamentalists all fundamentalists are not extremists.
