Healthcare rationing
Re: Healthcare rationing
Doubt either of us would be much good for that...

Aren't they referred to as donor cycles in the medical world?

Our time? Pardon me doctor. If you would rather keep smoking than live than do so, and stop wasting our time.
But personally, I think if a person feels helping someone (regardless of whether they choose to help themselves or not) is a complete waste of time, then perhaps that person should not be in the medical profession.
I can't argue with that either; so long as the odds are properly calculated and factored into the decision. If the payment source is the same for vascular surgery as it is for liver transplant surgery then the odds of the surgery succeeding should be taken into account in either case.

Yep.
And Jarl, have you no corneas? I am sure there is something of use on your body.
If nothing else you are setting a bad example and someone has to do that.
Re: Healthcare rationing
I have terrible vision. Liz is quite healthy (and has 40/20 vision, according to the optometrist), but a rare blood type, making a match unlikely.

My brother was a paramedic for several years and he said that motorcycle accidents were "practice".
I have signed my donor card since I started driving. In the tragic event I'm killed, someone else is welcome to the bits that still work. And good luck to them.

Sorry, but I just can't resist using this thread as an excuse to post one of my favorite John Prine songs...

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer,
Put my socks in a cedar box, just get 'em out of here,
Venus de Milo can have my arms, look out I've got your nose,
Sell my heart to the junk man, but give my love to Rose...

Re: Healthcare rationing
Jarl I don't think you have to have good vision for your corneas to make transplant viable. So sign your donor card but be careful out there on your bike.
Re: Healthcare rationing
I have a donor card I signed a while back that said I agreed to donate any and all organs for transplant, but the latest one on my license says for "transplant, research, teaching, or any other use". While I understand some may disagree, I do not relish the idea of having my liver in a jar being sold to a medical school, or my cell isolates used to generate a profit for some pharmaceutical company (as Moore v Regents apparently allowed); I still carry the transplant card in my wallet, but I do think the other cards should allow for checkoffs on permitted uses.

They can take what they need then fry the rest of me. Scatter ashes on the lake in Pa.
I would dny a lover transplant if I needed one. Someone more deserving should get it. Same with my lungs.

(Yes, of course I understand what you meant. It's still funny. At my age, and after being married for 46 years, I think I too would turn down a lover transplant.)

OOOPS
Anyway, Only one love in my life. Had to try the mistress a couple of week ago again, and we know how that turned out.

Re: Healthcare rationing
Well, I took anatomy where we had a couple of corpses to work on and i got to tell you what some people did was not completely respectful. I'm happy to give it all up for transplant but I don't really want to end up in a med school anatomy class. Its not rational because I'll be dead as hell and past caring by that point but the part of me here and now who is planning things just is not a bit into that. so there you go.Big RR wrote:I have a donor card I signed a while back that said I agreed to donate any and all organs for transplant, but the latest one on my license says for "transplant, research, teaching, or any other use". Re: Healthcare rationing
i was a donor for most of my life. since i first got my license in 1984 or 85. then i heard about some unscrupulous doctors who would not try real hard to save some donors in order to give others their organs. i changed my status on my last license renewal.
