The Cost of Hair Maintenance

Post by Joe Guy »

What does it cost for haircuts or hairstyling in your area of the world? Do you go at regular intervals or just when you think you need to go?

Take the attached poll on tipping your barber. With enough poster participation we might gather some interesting useless information for all to review.

Why no 10% option? Anyway, it's none of your business but if it was, I might admit to 10%. Or just whatever spare change I have at the time which is usually about 10%. But it's a bit of a bust - they give senior discounts to help out the old people like me. Why should I ruin their discount by giving it back to them. So it varies. Kill Steve. 20%. Leave him 80% alive.

For the record, I've been going to the same barber for many years. About a year ago the price for a haircut was raised from $18.00 to $20.00.

I always give a $5.00 tip. I gave the same amount when the haircut was $18.00.

$25 Au here, ($23 US or 14 GBP.) I don't tip Vish as it's not the done thing.

Last time I was in the UK I paid 6.75 GBP for the same cut, (No 4 clip all over.)

$200 + 20% tip every quarter for cut, highlights, and glaze. I have a lot of fairly long hair - it's always at least a 2 hour appointment. But it also always includes wine. Or chocolate. Or both!

The ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive hairdressing lives

I've been going to the same lady for 16 years...

Once a month, $25, $10 tip. (That's kind of a big tip for the charge, but I consider her a friend, and in all this time she only raised her price once.)

I pay $9 about once every two-three months. It's at a barber shop, not some nancy hairdresser. (ducks and covers)

5 dollar tip. I go whenever I can which is usually long overdue. sort of miss my long hair. back then I could go for 6 months or even longer without getting a trim.

I usually cut my own hair, but for special occasions there is one lady who does a really good scissor cut. I think the cut is 12 bucks and I pay with a 20 and and tip the change. my grandmother used to take me for cuts and she always tipped well. I do the same.

I have had a cut once where it was obvious the person was cutting it in such a way that I would need another cut in two weeks. no tip for her!

I'm somewhere between the first option and the second-to-last option. I have almost no hair on top, and the longish hair on the sides and back never gets cut, it just gets washed and tied back in a pony tail. (It seems to have stayed about the same length for many years now...I presume this means that the longer hair is falling out at approximately the same rate as it's growing out.) I guess if you average out the no-hair part and the long-hair part you could say that my hair is, on average, normal length but never needs cutting. Works for me. ;)

Hair will stop growing when it hits a certain length. (I've known a few that could grow it extremely long less than a foot from the ground braided) I got to a few inches above my ass. The length it can get is different for all people.

I used a salon for years where tipping was unnecessary, forbidden in fact. Now I have a young relative who just graduated
from a beauty academy so I may let her have at it and will tip heavily because of all the tripping I did to her in her youth.
My hair is ungodly long now so a trim is in order.

I have very long hair which my wife cuts every year or so.

My wife sees someone every few months (and used to fly down from Portland to do so). She was irritated when I pointed out that on an hourly basis he charges more than she, a surgeon, makes. But we both always tip well. Why not? Life is short, spread joy everywhere.

I have a couple of corrections:

It's been about 19 years, not 16, that I have had Heather cutting my hair...(As luck would have it, I just happened to have an appointment today.."Back To School Night" is Monday at Mercy...)

And it's probably more like 5-6 weeks rather than four between haircuts...

So, you're going with the classic "old hippie" look...

Why does that not surprise me... 8-)

I'm not at all surprised at your lack of surprise. ;)

Hey, why should I pay to have someone cut off the little bit of hair that's not falling out on its own? :shrug

I'm not sure what I'd do if I were in Econoline's situation. I would either shave my head completely or do exactly as he does.

Then again I might try this.... :D
