Some of my favorite handmade furniture can be found here:

Handmade furniture can be beautiful, functional, and affordable (I slept in a Stickley bed for 30 years- my current bed is also handmade from a small workshop in North Carolina). As much as I do love handcrafted furniture, those chairs are a crazy overly expensive choice.

I don't know Shakespeare Santa Cruz, but the NJ Shakespeare festival does the same thing--indeed, it is an equity workshop in residence at Drew University. It is essentially self-supporting and gives the university students and local actors a chance to work with equity and non equity professionals in addition to their chances to work with the university theater productions (all students, undergrad and grad) during the school year.

I agree with the idea of promoting good art, but I do think university funds should go to their teaching and research mission and not to acquire expensive artwork to use at university functions. if this were part of an acquisition to beef up the art collection for display or teaching, I would not find it a problem, but it does not appear to be such.

I was going to furnish my Craftsman-style house with all Stickley furniture, but then it dawned on me that having no children to leave heirloom-quality furniture to, it didn't make sense to buy the stuff in the first place.

So instead I'm buying pieces from LL Bean's Mission line, which are still very good quality and will last my lifetime - while the price difference goes into travel experiences.

As to the OP; it's a ridiculous expenditure for a university to make and the chairs themselves are ugly as shite.

The "designer" must have really seen them coming...

These University Dons got fleeced by a smooth talking conman like a bunch of small town yokels...
