That is not pink it's fuchsia and I think you get kicked out of the gay club for not knowing that.

I see one Mississippi and a bit north of it I see Missouri. Uneducated morons and republicans have trouble telling the difference between the two states.

In 30 years conservatives will be lying and saying that they were never in favor of oppressing homosexuals.

That map shows exactly why we should never have fought the Civil War and just let the confederate states leave.

Condemning someone for how they have behaved is not the same as condemning someone for who they are.

I'm rather fond of New Orleans and Memphis, myself, also the Virginia and North Carolina coasts; I'm glad we kept them. The rest, meh.

People ask for tolerance yet dislplay none of their own. This goes on right here and in RL.

I'm sorry, but I draw the line at tolerating intolerance. Would I not be acquiescing in the oppression bred by that intolerance if I were to tolerate it?

It's patently unfair to paint everyone in the south with the same brush simply because they live in a nest of intolerance.

Seriously it makes you look pretty bad in your own way.

The South is full of persons who are the target of racism, as well as having far too many racists in residence. I think we should all remember that before we comment broadly on the value of the region.

Culturally the South has made great contributions to this country; Faulker, Williams, Porter, Chopin, McCullers, O'Connor, Dickey, and Lee - just to name a few.

eta: and Southern BBQ, too!

sue--there are parts of the south I like as well, especially New Orleans; but I'd bet we could still visit them in the CSA.

wesw--I'm not condemning southerners, just noting that there is a big political divide in this country and suggesting perhaps both sides of the divide might have been happier if there were two countries.

With one political party in each country?

No, but I would think that the leanings of both parties (and any third parties) would be different in both countries. Certainly there are some in each area who embrace different politics, but I would think the majority shapes the party platforms on both sides; a comparison of the southern and northern democrats in the 60s shows this; so does comparing the republican party in various states at the same time (some of the more ardent anti-war congressmen and senators were republican--like Goodell from NY, e.g.). Both parties in the "CSA" would probably be a lot more tolerant of religious/civil entanglements than those in the split USA.

Again, it is not an indictment of southerners, nor any suggestion that all persons in the south or in the "north" think the same way; more a recognition that the regions appear to be very different politically for the majority if voters in each.
