Anchors Away! The Gulf in the Stream of Consciousness.
Anchors Away! The Gulf in the Stream of Consciousness.
Actually it is "anchors aweigh" but I learned the song from hearing it and I heard it at a very young age when I had not seen the word "aweigh" before so it lodged in memory as "away" which does kind of make sense like they're saying "get rid of those anchors, we're going places" and this is how things stood until a few minutes ago when I was selecting the boxer shorts with little anchors on them and the awful truth came to me in a flash of insight. And that is exactly as it happened to the best of my recollection.

Indeed. It comes from "weighing the anchor" (insert joke here) which means to raise the anchor. A-weigh or aweigh refers to the moment that the anchor is lifted up from its (LJ please note) grip on the sea-bed and effectively becomes a weight on the rope or chain.
Just desserts comes to mind also.

The movie that answers the burning question:
"Where can I see Gene Kelly dancing with a cartoon mouse?"

Just about every bad comedy sketch/cartoon
Captain: OK, men, weigh the anchor.
Sailor: 1241 lbs, sir.

Continuing with the Nautical theme, Long Dong Silver (which I believe was one of the names John Homes went by in his flicks).

No, Long Dong was a black porno actor...(He gained national fame during Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearing...)
Holmes sometimes went by "Johnny Wadd"...
