I've heard it its largely due to lack of exposure at a young age. And as you say culturally it used to be ubiquitous round here. I suspect it's rise is largely due to the rise of ready made meals and snacks that disposed of the quickie PB&J as parents go to meals.

Yes, the general public should accomodate those with problems WITHIN REASON. But what's within reason? Sure the old ladies could bring in prepackaged things, some containing nuts and clearly labeled and some not containing nuts, also clearly labeled. So now what, they want their tea and scones, so they go and open those packages. Now the library is just as contaminted as if they baked it themselves.

Banning everything and everyone from everywhere, would seem to be the answer.

No, I don't believe that the risks can be completely eliminated. There will always be inconsiderate oafs in this world who care not for the wellbeing of others. But there is a huge difference in the risk of exposure between a classroom where 30 kids routinely bring PB&J for lunch, and a class where one inconsiderate oaf of a parent sends his ikd to school with a PB&J in spite of a policy to the contrary.

The Canadian Transportation Agency ruled on Tuesday that Air Canada should create nut-free buffer zones around passengers who request special accommodation. The onboard snack and meal service would not include nuts or peanuts, or foods containing nut and peanut products, to passengers seated in the buffer zones.

I was pretty close to having a tracheotomy due to allergies (perfume, the invisible allergen) and still I joke about my circumstance. my face felt like two ballooooons

And I would still like to know how come we never saw this peanut allergy when we were young? Someone somewhere must have had it. Yet in my 12 years of school, with kids bringing PPJ sandwhiches every day, not one kid had an alergic reaction as far as I can remember.

You do have some clue don't you, that allergic reactions in children are entirely different in speed, intensity, and impact, than allergic reactions in adults.

I was 12yo at the time.
And on top of the alergic reaction, the ER first pumped me up with cortizone and guess what, I was alergic to that also. So don't tell me I don't know how childhood allergies affect children. Been there, experienced that, first hand.

I won't even go into detail about how allergic I was to poison ivy (suffice to say, 50 feet was too close).
