Guin--I recall those smaller pancakes as well, but not what we called them. Another pancake I recall from my Danish grandmother was Abelskeevers (not sure of the spelling), which were more like round puff pastries made in a special pan. I still have the cast iron pan (somewhere), but haven't made them for a long time because I lost her recipe.

Mealy - oh I don't cook 'em - nor does the missus. Only ever have them in hotels or the occasional Bob Evans.

And yes, Guin - that photo I posted was described as 'Swedish' pancakes.

I've seen king syrup; I assumed it was some sort of cane sugar syrup--is that correct?

The south has a lot of interesting syrups--I make a killer barbecue sauce using sorghum (not the easiest thing to find in the northeast, but readily available on the internet).

I believe it is cane sugar. it was what one of my great grandmothers used and I ve always liked it. i like the dark syrup or molasses. my wife and daughter don t like it, too strong for them. i think its an old company, but i m not sure. probably part of some conglomerate now, but idk

My grandmother used to make us waffles with King Syrup as kids. Its a Baltimore original -- corn syrup with sugar blend. It's like a caramelly almost molasses taste. I really like it, but its so so bad for you.

Also used as a main ingredient in shoo fly pie -- another local (PA Dutch) food I loved as a kid!

If I'm not mistaken Karo syrup (a corn sugar product) also has one of more karo/cane sugar blends, so I imagine these are similar. Is it dark like molasses?

Shoo fly pie--I liked that as a kid as well; way to sweet for my taste now (the same with pecan pie). Then again ,both are probably much better for you than Cinnabon, with that Crisco/Sugar stuff they put on them.

Golden color (like a nice grade A maple syrup), but thick like molasses.

You make it the bottom part of shoo fly pie by adding molasses and eggs. We used in it pecan pie filling as well (which I also love, but not more than once a year).
