Everything has been going well lately other than having to paint the kitchen (did I mention I hate painting). But my saintly wife wants the kitchen repainted so I am "happy" to oblige. The real problem is hours in the day. What with AA meetings and and group therapy and seeing my counselor and shrink. And my daughters car needs and oil change, and I still have millions of leaves to pick up in the yard and Christmas decorations and .......
But hey, I realise I have it good and thank my higher power daily. But sometimes one needs to vent.

Oldr--you may check and see if your community sponsors a "giving tree" or something like it where kids write what they wish for and you get the chance to (anonymously--the best way IMHO) be their "Santa". A few years back I say one wish where the only thing the kid wanted was enough money to get an apartment for her and her mom (social services put in an amount for rent and security) and I decided to donate it. It went through the social services department and I received a communication from the department that the two were now in an apartment. I have no idea what happened afterwards or if they are even still together (let alone in the apartment), but I felt good to reach out and make a kid's wish come true.

Good on you BigRR. and good idea but I am looking for more of a "hands on" type of donation.
I spoke to my sponser last night (he's viet nam vet) and he said they need extra help around the holidays at the VA in Northport. He goes there twice a week and is going to check it out. Maybe bring some needy vets to my house for Christmas dinner. Many of them are recovering alcoholics/addicts so we are of knidred spirit.

Excellent ideas as well; personally, I think you should do whatever catches your eye/interest. For me, a kid asking for a home tugged at my heartstrings based on personal experience when I was young and nearly homeless; trying to reach out to other kindred spirits or to where they really need help is great as well. But doing something for others will help both them and you--and it is especially fitting during these holidays, when those in need feel it a bit more. But as Scrooge's nephew said:

In my current practice I see a good deal of misery, but I also see great acts of kindness and can appreciate how even a little kindness and consideration can help immensely. We only have to take the first step, and if the season inspires us to do so, all the better.

I am going to do some VA stints these coming evenings. I may also be there on Christmas day for a bit. I am trying to get a vet or two to come home with me and enjoy a nice roast beef Christmas dinner but I would feel bad leaving others out.

I just had a brainstorm!!!!!!!
I have to run it by the wife but we could cook 2 roast beef dinners and I could bring one there.
I think that is the best idea.

Now I need to get a really big roast beef, a couple of bags of potatoes (we peel and cut up and roast the potatoes until crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside) and a lot of string beans for the stingbean casserole.

That's why I am leaning towards bringing a really big roast beef and trimmings to the VA hospital so all can enjoy (not a single dinner). Guess I didn't make myself clear on that. Sorry for any miscommunication

Oldr--is your oven large enough to do even one extra large roast? the same thing with pans and other cookware. How many people are you planning to feed? Perhaps you can talk with the VA home about working together and doing the cooking there. It sounds like a great idea, and should be something you could do.

I plan on doing that. This is all speculation about the Idea I had while typing that previous post.
Now that I have thought further about it, they probably have something similar already planned for the vets on Christmas. If not, I will present my idea and will do the buying, and preparing, ect... that's needed. But I have a feeling I will be there "helping" hte staff pull off what they have planned.
