The CIA at the time [the report was being compiled] was asking the Justice Department to launch a criminal probe of Feinstein’s staffers, a move she deemed tantamount to a constitutional breach of Congress’ right to legislative oversight. The CIA’s chief would later apologize,...
CIA lied to you
Re: CIA lied to you
Here's another little gem that reveals much about CIA methods. When Feinstein released the report yesterday, she noted this:
“I ask no favor for my sex. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.” ~ Ruth Bader Ginsburg, paraphrasing Sarah Moore Grimké

EDITED THAT LINE to read:How quickly we forget our attitudes in the aftermath of 9/11.
How quickly some people forget our attitudes in the aftermath of 9/11
so as not to put words in anyones mouth who doesn't agree with that statement.
I did not lose any sleep over anything the CIA did to these people. And would not if it was still going on. They can put my name on it and say they did it for me.
The same people that would not only torture us if given the chance but would torture and in the end, behead us. It remains to be seen if this causes any extra animosity toward us, they already hate us 100%, so can they hate us 110%?
I hope it does not endager anyone who has the job of protecting us and the USA in general. And I hope it doesn't "out" any operatives that are currently working to get real intel that can be used to protect us.
It's amazing how transparent this admin is with stauff not linked to them (and that would enrage our enemies) and that has little to do with the citizenry of the US. But when it comes to spying on us or doing extra probing into conservative groups looking to get a tax break they are very secretive. NExt wee need a report on all those drone attacks the admin is so fond of. How many non-combatants have the drones killed? Any US citizens killed by drones?

older, the point of your last paragraph is well made. I can t support torture tho. just because they would do it to us doesn t cut it with me. should we have enslaved the german s? starved them? made little swastika lampshades with their flayed skin?

Ask the people of Dresden, or Berlin or the workers in the factories. At least at the end of torture, one is still alive. Not so with drone attacks, carpet bombing, etc.wesw wrote:older, the point of your last paragraph is well made. Re: CIA lied to you
I'm also very disappointed in Diane Feinstein. Even though she's a Democrat, she's not usually this irresponsible regarding US security. (She's been spot on regarding the NSA programs) I believe she's allowed personal pique with the current CIA director to trump her best judgement.
There is absolutely no upside whatsoever to the release of this report. There's nothing new here; a handful very of bad actors were subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques over a decade ago in the wake of a terrorist attack on US soil that left 3000 Americans dead. As a result, critical actionable intelligence was obtained that saved many lives; end of story.
But the down side to the report's release is vast; we will likely be paying for it for years to come. The decision to release this report is probably the most damaging thing done by the government to US security since Obama's about face on bombing Syria.
I saw some idiot on the tube yesterday actually trying to argue that the release of this report would be seen by others in the world as a positive thing, showing how the US is willing to air this kind of thing in public...
That was so pathetic it was funny...What planet does that naive ninny live on?
This will be used as propaganda by our enemies and have our friends scratching their heads as to why we were dumb enough to release this...
Ain't nobody going to be patting us on the back...

That does trouble me and I alluded to the "nothing new" in my first (I think it was) post. There is absolutely no upside whatsoever to the release of this report. There's nothing new here

Re: CIA lied to you
And you know what bugs me more than the torture, the guy who helped find/get/lead us to bin laden is rotting in a pakistani jail (if I recall correctly).
And what about the guy who supposedly posted the anti-muslim video that supposedly cause the attack on the bengazi embassy. He's in one of our jails. We should have transparency about bengazi and fast and furious and the IRS.

the upside was that gruber s testimony, before congress, was buried in the aftermath of the report s release.

While I have not read the report, I can say with 99.999% confidence that none of those tortured in this report ended up dead due to the torture.wesw wrote:one is not necessarily still alive at the end of torture....
Would you rather be tortured or beheaded, buried alive or stoned to death?
Other than the "look us, we are so much better than the last admin and here's teh proof" factor of this report, I see only a negative side to this.

O.M.F.G.
Bloodlust and revenge does not make a civilized society. Openness and abiding by the rule of law does.
Older, to by crystal clear, you do NOT speak for me. What happened on 9/11 was appalling -- I said it then and I'll say it again -- it still doesn't justify stooping to their level, tossing away the Constitution, ignoring human rights. By orders of magnitude, I would much have preferred having Bin Laden in custody, wearing an orange jumpsuit, in shackles, beard shaved, looking up at a US federal court judge, than dead.
McCain has it exactly right:

McCain has it exactly right:
This is what makes us great, and what makes us Americans. Doing what the CIA did just makes us like everyone else.“We have made our way in this often dangerous and cruel world, not by just strictly pursuing our geopolitical interests, but by exemplifying our political values, and influencing other nations to embrace them. When we fight to defend our security we fight also for an idea, not for a tribe or a twisted interpretation of an ancient religion or for a king, but for an idea that all men are endowed by the Creator with inalienable rights. How much safer the world would be if all nations believed the same. How much more dangerous it can become when we forget it ourselves even momentarily.
“Our enemies act without conscience. We must not. This executive summary of the Committee’s report makes clear that acting without conscience isn’t necessary, it isn’t even helpful, in winning this strange and long war we’re fighting. We should be grateful to have that truth affirmed.
“Now, let us reassert the contrary proposition: that is it essential to our success in this war that we ask those who fight it for us to remember at all times that they are defending a sacred ideal of how nations should be governed and conduct their relations with others – even our enemies.
“Those of us who give them this duty are obliged by history, by our nation’s highest ideals and the many terrible sacrifices made to protect them, by our respect for human dignity to make clear we need not risk our national honor to prevail in this or any war. We need only remember in the worst of times, through the chaos and terror of war, when facing cruelty, suffering and loss, that we are always Americans, and different, stronger, and better than those who would destroy us.

You know that sees to be a pattern with this admin. Bring up a new "thing" when anything that might damage the admin is just being vetted.wesw wrote:the upside was that gruber s testimony, before congress, was buried in the aftermath of the report s release.

Re: CIA lied to you
That's (what oldr posted) what makes this so difficult:
Mtt: 5:38-39 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."
