I use the grass cutter on the tractor to chop and pick up the leaves which I then put into my compost piles. (I have 5 piles in various stages of decomposition) I make the best dirt around.

Seems to me that needing to bring in heavy outdoor furniture to keep it from being blown through a window might be you first clue that it is time to think about moving...well, unless your ides of "outdoor furniture" is plastic resin chairs.Guinevere wrote:Welcome to my world (I refer to my home as the ship --- the first floor is warm and cozy with lots of turn of the century knotty pine and it feels like being below deck -- the second floor is bright and airy and light, with tons of glass and windows and it feels like being on the main deck where you see lots of sky and water (I have water views in two directions))!Lord Jim wrote:I just walked out on our bedroom balcony, and it was like being on the deck of The Edmond Fitzgerald...
Quite "bracing"...
I have a second floor deck off my bedroom that faces east and looks out over the ocean (referred to by my sailing swede as "the bridge"). I've finally learned to just bring in my outdoor furniture so it doesn't fly around and slam into my house or the glass, or off into one of the neighbor's homes (or cars, or kids, etc).
Enjoy the weather, you deserve it and you certainly need it. I love stormy days, especially when everyone and everything is safe and sound, and I can stay home and enjoy the watching.

No plastic resin chairs, ever. All my outdoor furniture is heavy well-made metal, wood, or outdoor wicker.
Everyone here picks up and stores away their outdoor furniture for the winter. It's part of the deal (even if it doesn't blow, its a good idea to protect it from the high salt content in the air, for part of the season). Yes, winters can be tough, still wouldn't trade this place for anything (and the pay off is the unbelievable summers).
You've been to my town, you know what its like here. So far, its managed to stay populated since 1644. I don't expect that to change any time soon.

It hasn't been washed into the ocean.
Yet. Do waves still fling gravel over the seawall and onto Nantasket Avenue every few weeks?

Did you tell the padre his religion is "a bunch of old bollocks" at the Christening ceremony?

I store all my patio furniture away in one of the sheds for the winter. Keeps them in good condition year after year. No need to "buy new" every few years. I'm cheap frugal when it comes to my stuff. I tend to keep things longer than their natural lifespan. Saves me some money and keeps me from having to go shopping. did I mention I hate shopping?Everyone here picks up and stores away their outdoor furniture for the winter
My patio furniture is over 25 years old. One table has been repared once because some plastic thingies that hold the top glass to the base disintegrated. I made new ones out of some pvc pipes that I melted to to fit in the rim that holds the glass table top.
The bar set has not had any repairs yet, but I think it's going to need a coat of rustolium next year.
The redwood picnic table is rotting a bit where the bolts go through the top. I need to route the rotted parts and put in some new wood. Those are springtime jobs.

We always had to batten down even the good, heavy stuff at Chatham.
But I agree, there is nothing like living on the coast - the spring summer and early fall make late fall & winter well worth it.

I like the winter, especially the snow. Can't wait to go snowmobiling. Haven't gone in a couplle of years. Where we have a house in Pa hasn't gotten the snow we have had here on LI the past few years. If you weren't there right after the snowfall, it was unrideable in a few days.
Re: Old Man Winter Rides In Early...
So far our winter has been weird - we got some cold and snow, then it thawed out to 60 so now it's just ugly brown and cold. Hard to imagine ice fishing happening in a month.

You normally get, what...nine months of winter and two of almost-winter?

I can't wait for snow. Snowmobiles are out of summer storage, tuned up and ready to ride.
But we need snow.

Most of the porch furniture is wooden, but I did buy a resin rocker which I pimped out with padding and I love the damn thing. It does not make the annoying noises the wooden rockers do. Sadly the thing will still be around in the year 2610, hopefully not in a landfill.

Actually, I've found winters in Montana to be much more tolerable than winters in New England.Jarlaxle wrote:You normally get, what...nine months of winter and two of almost-winter?

Especially where I am now, which is in a valley ringed by mountain ranges - this area was the winter encampment for the Blackfeet Indians for hundreds of years, before they were forced onto the Rez up by Glacier Nat'l Park full-time.
