AirAsia Flight QZ8501 Goes Missing After Call for Course Shift
Rescuers scouring Indonesian waters for an AirAsia plane that went missing with 162 people aboard have found no sign of the missing jet more than 16 hours after it lost contact with air-traffic control, officials said Sunday.
After more than 10 hours of scouring the Java Sea, Indonesian authorities called off the aerial search for the night and said it would resume at 6 a.m. Monday (6 p.m. ET Sunday). Achmad Toha of Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) said some ships in the area would continue looking for the missing plane overnight, according to The Associated Press.
AirAsia Indonesia Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at around 7:24 a.m. local time in Indonesia (7:24 p.m. ET) on Sunday after requesting a course change due to bad weather while en route from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore.
Indonesia's acting director general of transportation, Djoko Murjatmodjo, said there had been no distress signal from the cockpit of the Airbus A320-200, but a minute before contact was lost, the pilot "asked to avoid clouds by turning left and going higher to 34,000 feet." Forecasters told NBC News that "numerous showers and hail" littered the missing jet's flight path.
"We hope we can find the location of the plane as soon as possible, and we hope that God will give us guidance to find it," Murjatmodjo told reporters. "We don't dare to presume what has happened except that it has lost contact."
The flight had 155 passengers on board, including 16 children and one infant, and two pilots and five crew members, the airline said. Most on board were Indonesian though there were around six foreigners — including three South Koreans, a British national, a Singapore national and a Malaysian. A French national was part of the crew, according to AirAsia.
"The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to en route weather before communication with the aircraft was lost," the airline said, adding that the missing plane last underwent maintenance on Nov. 16, and the pilot has a total of 6,100 flying hours.

But this looks a lot more explainable than Malaysian Flight 370:

Sad news.

You can always rely on Fux News to get to the heart of things;
Fox News co-host Anna Kooiman interviewed former FAA spokesperson Scott Brenner about the search for the missing flight Sunday morning, asking the airline industry insider whether foreign pilots were at a disadvantage since they were trained using the metric system. 'Even when we think about temperature, it's Fahrenheit or Celsius,' Kooiman said. 'It's kilometers or miles. You know, everything about their training could be similar, but different.'
While the Imperial System may provide a conversion challenge for metric users, it likely was not a problem since the vast majority of the world excluding the U.S. uses the metric system. Brenner pointed out that the bigger difference was foreign pilots' reliance on auto-pilot, which he says they are often required to switch over to after take-off. This requirement is due to the fact that most crashes are due to pilot error. He added that he believes 'our U.S. pilots are very well trained' for 'situations like this' because 'they actually fly the aircraft when they're in the cockpit'.
But Kooiman continued to ask Brenner if the difference in measurements were to blame, and if that makes international travel riskier. 'It's not just a difference in the way that we measure things?' Kooiman asked. 'Is it not as safe in that part of the world? Because our viewers may be thinking, "International travel, is it safe? Is it not safe?"'
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: Another Plane Goes Missing...
I'm sure that CNN is leading the pack on this portraying it as an continually breaking story. I only hope this one turns out to be a good ending and everyone is found safe.

Yeah, that must be it.Fox News co-host Anna Kooiman interviewed former FAA spokesperson Scott Brenner about the search for the missing flight Sunday morning, asking the airline industry insider whether foreign pilots were at a disadvantage since they were trained using the metric system. You betcha....I'm sure that CNN is leading the pack on this portraying it as an continually breaking story.
But I don't really blame CNN for that; when they went to the "All Flight 370 All The Time" format for weeks earlier this year, their ratings went way up...
I doubt this tragedy will have that same kind of audience longevity, because this doesn't have all the "mystery" elements of that plane disappearance...(the transponder being turned off, the course reversal, the flying for hours without communicating, etc.)
This plane also didn't put out a Mayday, but it's easy to see why that might not have happened; the crew was dealing with viciously bad weather. They were probably hit by some sudden weather event that required their full attention to try and fly the plane, (following the proper protocol for a flight emergency: "First fly, then navigate, then communicate") and they never had a chance to send out a Mayday.
This plane also went down over much shallower water; ( I understand the top depth in the Java Sea is about 1200 feet) so the odds that they won't find the plane are much less.
It's a terrible tragedy, but at least the families of the folks who lost their lives on this flight won't likely have the kind of agonizing ordeal of not knowing the fate of their loved ones that the relatives of those lost on flight 370 endured.

Her IQ was probably measured using metric.
Re: Another Plane Goes Missing...
I agree @W. Although I do recall one of the early airline disaster movies (starring John Wayne) in which the trouble was made worse by the fact that the navigator was using charts with nautical miles but forget to account for that with the fuel consumption (using standard miles instead). But if my car speedometer and GPS can display English or metric measurements, I would imagine all plane instrumentation used in commercial flights can.
Re: Another Plane Goes Missing...
Well, CNN's making progress..
I just checked a little while ago, and now it's no longer "breaking news"; they've moved it to "developing story"...but they're still wall-to-wall....
Again I can't say as I really blame them; there's clearly an audience for this kind of coverage, or they wouldn't be doing it...
And also, the week between Christmas and New Years is traditionally the most news-dead week of the year...it's not like there's some other important story that they're ignoring by focusing on this...
If they weren't covering this, they'd just be doing "2014 retrospectives", shots of Obama playing golf, and re-runs of Parts Unknown and Somebody's Got To Do It...

AirAsia: Bodies, Debris Found in Search for Missing Jet
Wreckage that was spotted floating in Indonesian waters today is connected to the missing AirAsia jetliner that crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday with 162 people on board, according to the airline.
In a statement, the airline said, "AirAsia Indonesia regrets to inform that The National Search and Rescue Agency Republic of Indonesia (BASARNAS) today confirmed that the debris found earlier today is indeed from QZ8501, the flight that had lost contact with air traffic control on the morning of 28th December 2014."
Six bodies, meanwhile, were recovered and taken to an Indonesian navy ship, said First Adm. Sigit Setiayanta, the Naval Aviation Center commander at the Surabaya air force base.

My former beau travels to Indonesia regularly as part of his work. I always take a deep breath when I look for the passenger manifesto/nationalities. That poor nation has really had a terrible year. I'm just glad they have the start of some answers on this one, more to be coming if they find the black boxes quickly (as it may appear).

Re: Another Plane Goes Missing...
I understand from news reports that the plane is largely intact in less than 100 feet of water, so there should be answers very quickly...

I'll wait for the definitive answer on the Smithsonian channel, along with re-enactments and authentic interviews

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
