Centenary

Post by Gob »

2015 marks some important (centenary) anniversaries in the UK's military history.

Battle of Agincourt 600 years
Battle of Waterloo 200 years
Battle of Neuve Chapelle 100 years
Battle of Gallipoli 100 years
Second Battle of Ypres 100 years
Battle of Loos 100 years
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Some Americans have followed the 150 year anniversaries of famous Civil War battles. WWII battles are often recalled on their anniversaries. I think, here, there will not be such widespread remembrances of significant WWI battles; but such battles had much more of an impact on Great Britain and the Empire.

have any of you read Churchill s History of English Speaking Peoples? much of it is probably outdated, but a good read. his memoirs of WWII are even better, eye opening. amazing man Churchill, warts and all.

I was personally insulted when Obama removed his bust from the white house and sent it back to England. I can only imagine how the brits felt.

How about the battle of New Orleans 200 years ago. We lost that one on purpose because we knew the war was already over....

USians won't be recalling the 100th anniversary of WW1 until 2017 and that of WW2 in 2041.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

wes--if I recall correctly, wasn't that bust a loan to W for the duration of his presidency and not a gift? If so, I would think they would be even more upset if he kept is as if it was a gift.

it seems that you are correct about that particular bust, however I doubt that the brits were demanding it back. I seem to remember that a number of them were quite insulted by the act.

what I found interesting, when I googled a new York times article about it, was that the Obama admin initially lied about the date and even the actual fact that the bust was returned. it seems that that pattern was and is their signature style.

oh just an honest mistake my good man, an honest mistake....

wanna buy the Brooklyn bridge?

It's a while ago, but I do recall something like the administration denying they sent anything back. Sadly, those gaffes are a characteristic of the administration.

sadly is right RR. even when I agree with what pres Obama says, I have a hard time believing that he really means it.
