Joe, fancy a pizza?

Post by Gob »

McDonald's might have the McOz, but it seems there will be competition for the title of "most true blue offering by an American fast food chain" this Australia Day, with Pizza Hut launching a Vegemite and cheese crusted pizza.

The latest frankenfood offering from the franchise that brought us the cheeseburger stuffed crust in 2014, the Mitey Crust Stuffed Pizza will feature mozarella and the nation's favourite breakfast spread, and can be ordered with any Pizza Hut pizza for an additional $3.

Although cheese and Vegemite is a classic sandwich combination found in schoolyards the country over, other products along these lines have a chequered history. "Vegemite Singles" (Vegemite covered Kraft singles) proved to be a flop in the '90s, while the Vegemite and cheese spread iSnack 2.0 (later branded Cheesybite) received a particularly cold reception when it launched in 2009.

That said, Cheesybite contains Vegemite and cream cheese, so there is still hope for this mozarella-based crust.

Pizza Hut will be serving the Mitey Crust Stuffed Pizza Australia-wide for three weeks from today.

As for which toppings may pair well with the salty, yeasty crust, perhaps take inspiration from your morning toast ritual. Or the old school lunchbox.

Tomato sauce, anyone?

Let me know how bloated you get ingesting that quantity of NACL. I bet your diastolic is 150 2 hours after the meal.

Thanks for the offer, Gob. I don't think I'd like that one. Although if you were to mail one to me, the vegemite would probably preserve the crust and I could try it.

I think it would be a lot like eating an anchovy stuffed crust pizza. Jim would like it... :D

We used to put butter on the crusts, like a bread stick. Now I just eat it/them. Haven't had a pizza with stuffed crusts as I am not a pizza hut/dominoes patron. Angelo's in town is where I get my pizza. Angelo does't do crust stuffing.

No, that would be a bit much...

Two or three anchovies per slice is plenty... :ok
