Meade, by "legislative action" I mean both lobbying of legislatures and actions of individual legislators who either introduce, sponsor, or vote for legislation based on their RC doctrine.

And that's worse than them basing thier vote on lining their pockets or their friends pockets or any number of other reasons they vote a certain way? i would rather my rep vote on his convictions/doctrine/morality than on greed or "one hand washes the other".
Who doesn't lobby legislators for their own purpose?
Where they get their views doesn't really matter does it?
People/corporations/groups/etc. lobby for what they want from the gov be it money (grants), favorable tax breaks, government contracts ..... I could go on. If people of the Catholic faith want thier representative to vote (or propose a bill) a certain way, it is their right to do that. Many people will oppose that bill, many will not care and many will support. Such is with any piece of legislation regardless of how the writer of said legislation got their "idea" for it.

That's their doctrine. I don't agree with it, but they can believe what they want.

I don't dispute that, but the fact that the pope chose to give such preeminence to and use such inflammatory language in discussing the very topics that he had previously said the Church had been obsessing about too much makes me wonder what brought about the about-face.

Look, I am the last person in the world to think that the RC Church is going to embrace same-sex marriage or to make abortion the eighth sacrament, but I don't see what changed in the last few months that necessitated reverting to the tired old clichés about people wanting to destroy the family, etc.

I was really thinking that at least some movement in the Church's stance on contraception was within the realm of possibility with this Pope, but that doesn't seem to be on the cards...

Well, it's their growth plan; more kids will eventually yield more catholics contributing to the coffers.
