Region girds for ‘crippling’ blizzard

Up to 3 feet of snow possible

A “crippling” blizzard that could drop up to 3 feet of wet, heavy snow amid whiteout conditions is set to move into the region Monday afternoon.

“This storm definitely has the capability of being not only historic but also catastrophic,” said Benjamin Sipprell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton. The weather service issued a blizzard warning in effect from 7 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Wednesday.

“People should be making preparations right now,” Sipprell said Sunday.

“This is going to be all-out whiteout snow, crippling everything. We’re highly advising no travel, starting late Monday, going into Tuesday and on into Wednesday.”

Strong winds are expected with gusts as high as 75 miles per hour, particularly from late Monday into Tuesday. The strongest winds are expected across coastal areas, the weather service said.

Leaders from “key agencies,” including the Massachusetts National Guard, State Police, and the departments of Transportation, Public Health, Conservation and Recreation, and Public Utilities met Sunday at the State Emergency Operations Center in Framingham, said Peter Judge, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

Their top concerns were providing adequate shelter for those who will need it, assisting stranded motorists, dealing with extended power outages, managing debris, fuel issues, and evacuation support, Judge said. “It’s been a few years since we’ve had a . . . potentially major storm like this,” Judge said.

He noted that since Governor Charlie Baker took office earlier this month, new leadership is in place at many state agencies, but he said that those agencies have many top officials with experience handling major winter storms.

In a statement Sunday night, Baker said, “Unless forecasts change between now and tomorrow evening, people across Massachusetts should presume that roads on Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday, will be very hard, if not impossible, to navigate; that power outages are a distinct possibility; and that most forms of public transportation may not be available.

Hope we get a good amount up in PA so I can head up and do some snowmobiling this weekend.
In the mean time, the plow is on the tractor. Bought a new snowshovel a few weeks ago. Got 10 gallons of gas in the gas cans and tested the generator yesterday in case the lights go out. Full tank of gas in the car. Extra gloves, boots and a shovel in the car also. And three bottles of ice tea and a bag of chips. And a blanket.
I'll get to test out my new Subaru and it's AWD on the way home tonight. Hope it doesn't take me 6hours to get home like the storm 2 years ago.

Stay safe guin. I think we'll make it out the other side.

His state is implementing a travel ban as of 9PM this evening...He also said that if the power goes out, people should expect that it will be out for several days...

Man, I sure wouldn't want to be a person in New York or New England who needs to get to a hospital in a hurry the next couple of days.

I recall the blizzard of '78. I was lucky to be away at college and stuck in the dorm partying my way through it. This was a pic taken of the road I lived on when at home.

Oldr, the storm surge could be worse than Sandy. 60 mph winds and 20-30 foot waves offshore. That's hardly ho-hum.

The only good news is that this will be relatively fast moving. Unlike the Blizzard of 78 which hung around for a long time (I remember it too, I had chicken pox and was home sick anyway, which was a bummer).

Oldr, I saw on the news a little while ago after Cuomo spoke, (NY is looking at a travel ban starting at 11 PM) that in addition to 2-3 feet of snow, they're expecting 60 MPH winds in the city, and 75 MPH on Long Island...

If I were you I'd head for home as early as I can, hunker down and have that generator at the ready...

Because there's a real good chance you'll need it...

Still not bad yet. It's snowing but it's melting on the roads. My biggest problem is all the other people on the roads. Two years ago when we got dumped on (30+") took me 5 or 6 hours to get home (35 mile drive).

I'm smack dab in the middle of the island (north-south) if the storm surge makes it to me, we have really big problems.

Generator is ready. Tractor is ready. We had a few inches friday overnight and saturday I plowed the driveway.Good test run for this storm. I'll have to go out every few hours or it will get too high for the tractor. Need to keep at least a path down the driveway, then I can knock down the higher stuff. Otherwise I borrow my neighbors snow blower like I did two years ago.
Biggest problem with the tractor is where to push the snow.

LJ - I have a few small battening chores - bringing in my kayak from under the house, moving garbage cans, etc. plus I need to turn up the heat and feed the cat. So home it is.
