Be safe all who are affected, keep us informed please.

I've been checking the East Coast weather today; sister is NW of Boston, and Dad is on the shore north of Portland, ME. He's up a hill, so surge is not a problem, but trees regularly get blown down across his power lines. Luckily, he's got a generator.
Good luck, everyone, and stay warm!

I could use a snow day.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Meanwhile in south central Montana it's 61 degrees - global weirding.
Keeping all my family and friends in coastal New England in my thoughts & prayers - hopefully you'll have nothing more than some time off work to deal with. Cuddle up with a good book or a board game!
Hopefully the beaches will still be there after the storm has passed.

Stay safe everyone.
This is an extreme example of bad weather, but a reason all the same why they should never again have the Super Bowl in New York, like they did last year (and lucked out on the weather).

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015 ... /22388241/Mighty storm hammers Northeast; NYC 'dodges bullet'
A mighty storm marched resolutely across the deserted streets of the Northeast early Tuesday, showing mercy on New York City and Philadelphia but relentlessly pounding Boston and many coastal areas with heavy snow, high winds and whiteout conditions.
More than 50 million people were hunkered down in the angry storm's path. More than 7,000 flights were canceled, road travel was banned in several states and schools were closed for millions of kids.
The storm was forecast to continue roaring through much of the region through Tuesday, although forecasters were downgrading the storm's potential impact in some areas.
"It's a case of haves and have nots," AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Roys told USA TODAY on Tuesday. "The worst of it is in the coastal areas. Other places have been relatively spared."
Philadelphia, which on Monday morning appeared to be vulnerable to huge snow totals, had about an inch downtown early Tuesday. A blizzard warning was canceled for New York City and New Jersey.
Mayor Bill de Blasio opened city streets to traffic at 7:30 a.m. and said subways would be running "soon." The city had feared a blast of 20 inches of snow or more, Central Park had almost 8 inches Tuesday morning.
"This is a better-safe-than-sorry scenario," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on CNN Tuesday morning. "It is still very bad on the streets... but we dodged a bullet."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo lifted driving bans everywhere except Suffolk County. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lifted the driving ban statewide.
A sheepish National Weather Service office in New York posted this on its Facebook page: "The science of forecasting storms, while continually improving, still can be subject to error, especially if we're on the edge of the heavy precipitation shield. Efforts, including research, are already underway to more easily communicate that forecast uncertainty."
Not everyone was feeling fortunate, however. Coastal areas of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Long Island, N.Y., were facing blizzard conditions -- heavy snow with consistent wind gusts in excess of 35 mph.
The island of Nantucket, Mass., was without power, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without power. Worcester had 25 inches of snow. Parts of Long Island had 21 inches early Tuesday.
And there was plenty of storm left to go. Some areas south and west of Boston could see three feet of snow by early Wednesday, Roys said
"It's a blizzard in Boston," Roys said. "And they will be seeing a whole lot of snow."
Near hurricane-force winds were causing white-out conditions and coastal flooding in some areas, along with bone-chilling temperatures and icy roads.
"The winds could lead to power outages, but the good news is there are no leaves on the trees," Roys said. "Tree limbs can only hold so much snow."
Nearly 8,000 flights from coast-to-coast were had already been canceled until Thursday by the blizzard, dubbed Winter Storm Juno by The Weather Channel and Blizzard '15 by several media outlets. Boston's Logan International Airport did not expect flights to resume until late Wednesday.
Amtrak service was suspended between New York and Boston for Tuesday, while other regional routes were to operate on reduced schedules. Coastal residents braced for flooding from hurricane-force winds. Strong winds had ConEd and other utility companies bracing for widespread power outages, with emergency repairs crews from Michigan and other areas already en route.

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
Brutal night, lots of significant flooding, and no sleep. My street is still full of water and the accompanying debris. The town is working on debris clearing now but this storm is going for at least one and maybe two more tide cycles. Winds still 40 mph, waves approaching 25 feet offshore, and storm surge of 3 feet. Snowing hard too and very cold. Lost power around 2. I have some erosion damage around my driveway and house, and lost the door to a storage area under the house but I took a quick look around and it's mostly ok. Completely iced over - I'll take some pictures later, for now I'm getting back under the covers!

Wow, sounds nasty! Be safe, (but do take pictures!)+

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
Hope things have cleared out for you, Guin. I heard oldr's neighborhood got whacked pretty good, too. Our end of the storm dumped a whopping inch and a quarter of snow on us. (The National Weather Service chief meteorologist for the Philadelphia area was extremely embarrassed and apologized for getting the forecast for our area so colossally wrong.)
GAH!

I've commented to husband that it seems like they do a worse job of predicting than they used to before they had as many sophisticated devices to do the predicting.

But if you like it why do we hear the constant moaning complaints then?
Shouldn't you see someone professionally about that?

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
I don't hear moaning at all, and if there is some occasional complaints, its hardly constant. I'm certain, however, there is some bragging that happens too, especially in the summer.
I'm living in the repercussions of global warming. I'm not sure my beautiful 115-year-old home will be here in 100 years. Or my beach, or my neighborhood. That's tragic. AND we can still, potentially, do something to stop it. But if we don't act soon, we're a lost cause. Surely, sharing the impacts of what we are going though can be useful to the education process.
Or, do you just wish to piss on something because you can?

Survived the second tide. Power back up. Will have to assess the damage tomorrow. Never got out very far today, it was either too dangerous or, well, too dangerous. Lots of snow, still plenty of water, my street still impassible. There are some insane pics I'll collect and share later.

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
Made it.
After seeing only 2-3" when I went to bed monday night, I thought we might be getting less than predicted. Woke up tuesday morning to 2+feet. I had already pulled the tractor out of the shed and positioned it in hte driveway covered with a tarp. Took most of yesterday to plow out the driveway. I was almost done when the tractor died. I think I blew a valve as there is no compression, not even after shooting oil in the cylinder. Oh well, something else to fix. Borrowed my neighbors snow blower and finished up. Gotta see if anyone has any left over snowblowers for sale. I know the local Home Depot and Lowes are sold out.
If I buy one, you know there won't be any more snow. If I don't buy one you know we will get slammed again.
They had the roads closed monday night. Rte 83 (major north south road) was closed at 6pm to prevent a repeat of two years ago. It has a big hill and hundreds of cars were stuck on it that night.
Went out yesterday to get my Rx's and looks like everyone had stocked up on bread and milk as the shelves were empty in the supermarket.
The new Subaru had no problem driving through the snow, but then again, I never had much of a problem driving in the snow with any car I owned (VW bug,Dart, vw bus, another dart, pontiac, pt cruiser). Just keep moving, dont' stop and plan your manuvers.
Glad you didn't get washed away Guin. Hope your cleanup is easy.
We were blessed it wasn't worse.

My dad up in Pa only got about 4". No snowmobiling this weekend.

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
oldr--I only got about 5-6 inches; one of the few times that areas "north and west of the city" didn't get it worse than the city. But it sounds like you got hammered. You might check on line for snow blowers as well.
