Here's what Paul said that was the most reckless and irresponsible:

He repeats the completely unsubstantiated garbage put out by Michele Bachmann in the last campaign and then says, "I'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea."
Then why even put that mythology out there Senator? It would be like somebody saying:
"I have heard of many tragic cases of children who drink from that well turning into giant lizard people, but I'm not arguing that drinking water from that well is a bad idea."

(I apologize for the all caps, it's the way the transcript is on the website. You can read the whole interview here:I HAVE HEARD OF MANY TRAGIC CASES OF WALKING, TALKING NORMAL CHILDREN WHO WOUND UP WITH PROFOUND MENTAL DISORDERS AFTER VACCINES. I'M NOT ARGUING VACCINES ARE A BAD IDEA.

It ranks up there with Bill Frist claiming to diagnose Terri Schiavo from a video and Tom Coburn saying that condoms are ineffective at preventing transmission of STIs. There is apparently something about becoming a Republican legislator that makes medical doctors abandon their reason and training.

Re: Vaccination: the next victim of political polarization?
Where do you find these fuckers?A US senator has suggested that restaurants should not have to make their employees wash their hands after toilet visits.
Senator Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, made the comments on Monday during a speech criticising business regulations.
"Let them decide" such issues, the newly elected lawmaker said.
His argument was that restaurants which did not require workers to wash their hands would quickly go out of business.
"But I think it's good to illustrate the point, that that's the sort of mentality we need to have to reduce the regulatory burden on this country," Mr Tillis said.
He suggested that restaurants that did not require hand washing would have to alert customers with prominently displayed signs - itself a regulation.
Mr Tillis stood by his comments when interviewed later at the US Capitol.
"Sometimes there are regulations that maybe we want to set a direction, but then let those who are regulated decide whether or not it makes sense," Mr Tillis told the Associated Press news agency.
"They might pay a huge price," he said, but "they get to make that decision versus government."
The comments come as some Republican presidential hopefuls have questioned vaccine regulations amid a measles outbreak.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: Vaccination: the next victim of political polarization?
From Obama's White House:
As for the hand washing comment, that pol will be trying to wash his hands of his inartful explanation of the point he was attempting to make. That point being -- do we really need to have a sign up telling employees they are required to wash their hands since this is common sense and good business practice. It is akin to requiring a notice: "Warning, the coffee is hot, and can burn you if you spill it!" It was a dumb example of an unnecessary regulation since it is such an easy and no-cost thing food-service entities have to comply with.
When the D-President says it, it's not news, but when an R says the same thing, it becomes this week's manufactured news. That's how the U.S. media works, and they will now go around looking for things Rs have said that are either actually stupid or can be spun to look stupid, all the while ignoring any stupid or potentially stupid things said by Ds."Well, the President certainly believes that these kinds of decisions are decisions that should be made by parents, because ultimately when we’re talking about vaccinations, we’re typically talking about vaccinations that are given to children. But the science on this, as our public health professionals I’m sure would be happy to tell you, the science on this is really clear."

I'm so tired of hearing ignorant references to the infamous McDonald's coffee case, as the evidence in the case overwhelmingly established the negligence of McDonald's in serving scorchingly hot coffee that resulted in no fewer than 700 SEVEN HUNDRED incidents of harm before they finally had to pay the fuck up and alter their practices.
My Bunn makes brilliant hot coffee, but on the few occasions I have accidentally spilled some on my bare skin, or sipped it too soon after pouring it, I have not suffered 2nd or 3rd degree burns. Because it does not heat the coffee to scalding.
McDonald's was grossly and willfully negligent and paid the price. Somehow they managed to stay in business and their coffee still sells like crazy at the new lower temperature.

Also too, Thom "Don't Let Them Make You Wash Your Hands" Tillis is clearly A Idiot, but he represents the goofball libertarian all-regulations-are-evil anti-government mindset that infests the Teahadi wing of the GOP: The invisible hand of the market will solve all our public health and safety problems -- never mind that it would be only after we have a sufficient number of cases of hepatitis, salmonella, e coli, typhoid, cholera, dysentery, etc., etc. And these are the morons America has entrusted with making its public policy.

Not to mention our NEXT (

I hope the pundits like Pierce are wrong. I hope the GOP comes to its senses and shouts down the idiots within its ranks. But the past six years have not been encouraging...Hillary Clinton wrote:"The science is clear: The earth is round, the sky is blue, and vaccines work. Let's protect all our kids."

All right, then! Credit where due; kudos to Jeb Bush:
“Parents need to make sure their children are vaccinated,” he said definitively to applause from the crowd in attendance. “Do we need to get into any detail of that?” [...] “I think it’s better just to say parents have a responsibility to make sure their children are protected, over and out.”

But science that complex would probably make the anti-vaxxers' heads explode.

Wow, thanks Sue! Not having HBO ever, I'd never heard about this documentary. I'll be watching it as my Friday night movie.Sue U wrote:You should all see this movie:bigskygal wrote:I'm so tired of hearing ignorant references to the infamous McDonald's coffee case, as the evidence in the case overwhelmingly established the negligence of McDonald's in serving scorchingly hot coffee that resulted in no fewer than 700 SEVEN HUNDRED incidents of harm before they finally had to pay the fuck up and alter their practices.

Gah.
I was very inspired by my Torts professor's teaching of the McDonald's case, which was about 2 or 3 years before I went to law school. I remember listening to people bitch about the case when it happened, and when I decided to go to law school, some of my more conservative relatives teased me saying, 'you'd better not end up suing over hot coffee'. I'm sure PI attorneys heard that shit endlessly! My eyes were really opened when we studied the case documents in Torts, and that Christmas saw some heated debate at the feast dinner table.
I also started a habit with one of my best law school friends of going to the movies after exams, instead of going to the Irish Times pub down the street from GULC and endlessly analyzing the essay questions with classmates - we felt our post-exam detox was healthier. One of the movies we saw that first exam season was Grisham's Rainmaker, which left me wanting to sue big bad corporations for a living. Of course I've spent my first several years of practice in nonprofits and government jobs, but now I'm contemplating whether I want to get into PI work after all. I've joined the bar association here that serves PI attorneys, I'm going to attend some CLE and make some connections and test the waters. I believe very strongly in the right of injured persons to sue for recompense, and I also believe it's the only way many businesses will do what is morally right.
Can't wait to watch the film, but a long day tomorrow so I'm going to be good and go to sleep instead of watching it right away. SO glad HBO made all their older stuff available to Amazon Prime!

Unfortunately sanity seems to be running thin in the Republican Party. At least the Democratic Party particular brand of insanity seems to be limited to harming itself.

I think my party has some excellent candidates in the field this go around...
My first pick is Jeb Bush, but I could easily support Scott Walker, John Kasich, Marco Rubio, even Chris Christie....(though I think Christie's got to learn how to "put a sock in it")
But as I have said before, if by some nightmare scenario, we were to nominate the anti-national security, anti-national defense Rand Paul...
I will join Republicans For Hillary...(hell, I'll help organize it)
I have been, (to paraphrase Nelson Mandela) "a lifelong and disciplined member" of the Republican Party...for four decades...
And that has required some nose holding on occasion...(I even voted for Michael Huffington...)
But if my party were to nominate a man with a McGovernite philosophy on foreign policy for the Presidency, (like Paul) that would be a bridge too far...
