Cartalk Aliases - Now it Can be Told...

Post by Joe Guy »

This thread will be of little interest to those who never posted at Cartalk. It may be of even less interest to those who did...

But I'm going to click on the Submit button anyway...

I was driving on the highway today and for some unknown reason I was thinking of the Cartalk website and the name Speedy Gooddriver came to mind. Do any ex-Cartalkers remember that name? He had a long argument with quaddriver that started in the Rant & Rave forum and continued on in All The Rest forum and lasted for a long time.

I remember quad had made the statement that he knows driving on the highways better than anyone else. Then Speedy popped up out of nowhere and challenged him and ridiculed him regularly.

I was Speedy Gooddriver.

Remember OBserver?

Some of you have already figured out that was me. That was a fun one because sometimes I had conversations with myself as Joe Guy and OB. I remember once that I responded to someone as Joe Guy but the conversation was supposed to be with OBserver. Nobody noticed.

Anybody remember B0bB? Not the real BobB. Bob with a zero B. BobB irritated me with his writing because he always writ sorta lak this-n' to emphasize his Southern accent. Do you remember the story written by B0bB that documented his traveling across the country from (Georgia?) to Redding CA?

Yup. That was me.

Another guy that hung around for a while was DeuceWalker. That name was a takeoff on the name QuadDriver but I don't think Deuce ever talked to quad. He was just a guy who rambled on and on to make a point. He wasn't around for long...

Has anyone else here used other names on a forum where they were already posting as a regular or am I the only mentally twisted person that has done it and/or will admit to it now?

I'm pretty sure that Mental Floss was another Cartalk regular's alias and another one that I can't remember the name of a poster who wrote about bringing a gun to church. Was it Urban Guerilla?

I'm just sitting back and reflecting on my misspent cyber-youth. This thread probably will not generate much interest so I might have to create more characters to keep a conversation going...

I always figured you were Speedy Gooddriver... 8-)

That one really got under Quad's skin...

The time he came out here back in the late 90's and Kelly and I met him for lunch at The Cliff House, he vented at some length about that asshole... :D

Always knew you were OB...

There were others who played similar shell games but I cant remember who any more. I was always just myself. Why would I want to be anyone else?

I don't recall using any other handles at Cartalk, (though I always suspected that there were some folks creating "nom de guerres" for the purpose of being more obnoxious towards me than they preferred to be under their main handles... ;) ) but I did create 3 other nicks that I used at the CSB...

But I only used them "situationally" a few times, (not to create some sort of on-going "alter ego") and I believe I already copped to them:

Leland Gaunt, Politeness Man, and mediator666....

It was fun. As I do here now, I went to Cartalk for entertainment.

I was Quaddriver at CarTalk.

"mediator666" was a short-lived (but hilarious, if I do say so myself 8-)) character I created to parody the white Libertarian who started pretending to be a left-wing black militant known under the handle "mediator624" (or some other similar number)

The guy who, in this new made-up persona, was constantly accusing me of being a racist...(you may recall, I had an occasional negative exchange with him... 8-) )

(If memory serves me correctly, Strop may also have had one or two cross words with the lad...)

What a shame he never made it to this board...

If you were Quaddriver then you must have sent a very bad body-double to have lunch with us, because you don't look a thing alike....

Plus I was able to understand every word he said... :P

thanks Joe for bringing up some people I haven't thought of for years; it was an interesting cast of characters there.

Now that I think about it, I did use one "alter-ego" briefly at The Cafe Darte

"Lippy The Gimp"...

It was a takeoff on the "Skippy the Chimp" persona that "Bones" liked to assault me with... 8-)

I was initially known as "Sue Urass," but at some point took on the kinder, gentler handle I use now. I'm pretty sure I never posted under another name. I do remember what seemed like an awful lot of people using the "cloneboy" handle.

The only time I had an alias was when I was a moderator at a forum. I used it to see how any changes made to the board looked/behaved to the regular posters. I did let everyone know that it was me.

ETA
I have always been "oldr_n_wsr" on any and all forums I have posted on.

You've got me geezering now...

Great Ftf's...

DC, ( a great FtF, Guin was there, as I recall we had nearly 20 Cafe Darties at that one...I did my incredible rendition of Secret Agent Man... 8-) ) LA, (where I went boogie boarding with Buzz Light Year and also met up with Doc Brown and Nette) Vegas, Sacramento, several in 'Frisco...

Dorothy and I used to have a running competition to see who could meet the most other "Darties"...

(And Ray...Do you remember the "RayTom Project?" 8-) )

Back in the days when I was responsible for no one but myself, and if I felt like jumping on a plane to meet up with some folks, I could just do it any time I felt like it...sigh...

There are times I miss those days, but I wouldn't trade them for what I have now...

I have to wonder, LJ, what brought you to the Cartalk website? Did you come to share your automotive mechanical skills?

Or was it to brag about installing a paper towel holder? :D

I discovered Cartalk when I was searching for information on my '72 VW Beetle that I was driving back then. To this day I've never heard a 'Click & Clack' broadcast.

I remember my first post was something like HELLO I'M NEW HERE AND I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND MY JOINING IN?

The first reply I got was DON'T SHOUT

It took a while but I finally figured it out. Then of course some shortsighted idiot said I was welcome and so I stuck around.
