BOSTON (AP) — After cold and snow that set February records, southern New England is entering March with another round that could push Boston over its 20-year-old snowfall record.
With 102 inches, Boston needs 5.7 more to break the 1995-1996 record of 107.6.
Snowfall of 4 to 6 inches was expected by early Monday across the area, with up to 8 inches in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Less is expected in northern Massachusetts and New York state, and on Cape Cod. "We have come this far, we might as well break the record," said William Babcock, National Weather Service meteorologist in the Taunton, Massachusetts office. "We have a couple of storms to push us over the record. Once that is done we won't complain if we don't get any more snow."
Since it's early March, "we still have plenty of time," he said. The snow Sunday night into Monday will be wetter than those earlier in the season, continuing the concern about potential roof collapses. "If you have flat roofs, it is certainly going to add to the weight," Babcock said. Elsewhere, heavy snow is expected in the central Rockies and Great Basin, and heavy rain in parts of the Southwest. Snow was falling from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast, with freezing rain in the Mid-Atlantic.

WHAT A MESS
Last night there was about an inch of snow... then a misty rain... then a little more snow... turning to slush... all turning into rock solid ice. Icicles everywhere and on everything.
It's now intense sunlight at 35°F and the greenhouse effect has made most of it vanish. 40°F highs predicted for all next week.

2-3 inches. I think we are officially 3.5 away from the record -- with more snow expected tomorrow night/Wednesday/Thursday.
I spent this morning in court on one of my pro bono divorce cases. The court house is in one of the less well-to-do cities on the South Shore, and its just a mess there. Sidewalks are still uncleared and people (myself included) are walking in the streets to get from place to place. There was really no on-street parking, either, so the few lots are jammed.

My sister (NE of Boston) said that one of her neighbors had dug a trench from the back door out in to the back yard, and dug a large circular room (no roof), and set up the outdoor furniture and the grill. My BIL is building an igloo. We're praying for rain here in NoCal.

More snow coming today/tonight for NY area. 2-4 inches then sleet and rain. Don't know about the Boston area.
I like snow, but I am ready to throw in the towel.

I wish I had gotten my broccoli and peas in before the snow....

More, more and more. Tonight. Tomorrow. Thursday. Temps still in the 20s, no real warm up in sight yet.
eta: I just read its been 43 days since we have had a temperature reach 40 degrees. Good lord. This is Massachusetts, not Canada!

The snow has started here, supposed to change to rain tonight, then the proverbial "wintry mix" through tomorrow, with snow accumulations tomorrow night into Thursday in the 3-5 inch range. Go stock up on wine, cocoa and cat food, Guin.
GAH!
Re: "No Place To Put The Snow"
We're getting the snow/wintry mix as well and they just canceled the class I teach this evening, so I guess they're expecting ice and slippery roads.
Re: "No Place To Put The Snow"
Got a couple inches of snow then ice on top of that.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: "No Place To Put The Snow"
I've got an open bottle of Austrian Zwiegelt, and plenty of other options. Plus left over braised short ribs and polenta for dinner tonight, and plenty of soup, crackers, cocoa and other sustenance if I'm stuck at home tomorrow.Sue U wrote:The snow has started here, supposed to change to rain tonight, then the proverbial "wintry mix" through tomorrow, with snow accumulations tomorrow night into Thursday in the 3-5 inch range. I kind of hope I am, I'm exhausted. But I expect I'll be trekking through the weather to attend to my clients many needs.

http://www.oregonlive.com/weather/index ... on_re.htmlThe end of February will close the warmest winter on record in Portland [Oregon] and tie a record in Salem, the National Weather Service said Saturday.
The meteorological winter is the three-month period from December through February. Temperature records date back to 1940 in Portland and to 1893 in Salem.
February alone set its own record. It was the warmest February on record in both Portland (average temperature of 49.2 degrees) and Salem (average temperature of 48.8), beating the previous records set in 1991.
Been running and hiking on dry forest trails most of the winter.

43 degrees and rainy this morning, but the birds were singing and it felt like spring compared to the last month or so.

It will be in the low 50s tomorrow and climbing higher each day for the next week straight, culminating with a 60+ degree day next Saturday - if you believe the forecast, anyway.

1.9 inches to the record and Mother Nature is now teasing us by sending all the snow south. Unlikely to break it today, given the current forecast but we will keep on trying.
Yesterday, we did have our first 40 degree day since January 19. Finally, a bit of melting!

Now that you've come this close, you might as well go for it; plenty of time left in the game...1.9 inches to the record

Re: "No Place To Put The Snow"
This week's storm apparently did not get the memo that Boston is the target. We seem to be getting all the snow here today. Supposed to be 6-8 inches by the end of the day.
