It is a phenomenon which has been long-studied. When men are trapped long-term in male-only environments some of them will seek sexual outlets they would not otherwise. Prisons, Shaka's army, the Bedouin (related in TE Lawrence's book) the Mamluks in Egypt, &c.

In fairness to the good Doctor, he has apologized (sort of):

And then, in a radio appearance later Wednesday, he criticized CNN for airing the comments he'd made in an interview and said he won't be addressing gay rights issues for the duration of his presidential campaign.[I think that's a wise decision Doctor ...]

Carson had asserted Wednesday morning on CNN's "New Day" that homosexuality is a choice because people "go into prison straight -- and when they come out, they're gay."

He backtracked in a statement afterward, saying he "realized that my choice of language does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues."

"I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended," he added.

Yes, it's long been a time honored tradition in broadcast journalism never to air the most controversial or newsworthy thing that a prominent public figure says in an interview...

It just isn't done...it's considered rude...

So the way that he intended to "express the concept" that he does " not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation" is to answer the the question "You think being gay is a choice?" with the categorical, unqualified one word response, "Absolutely"....
