American Pharoah - Triple Crown material?

Post by BoSoxGal »

Did anybody watch the Preakness? Started pouring not long before the race was set to start, made for a great race and the Derby winner took it handily.

Wondering if this horse might be able to do what no horse has done in decades now . . .

It was on. Made watching paint dry interesting - it's the NASCAR of the horsey world.

I'd like to see another horse do it. I remember watching Secretariat when I was a kid win the Belmont by something like 30 lengths; (man, what a horse...you don't see them like that very often) I believe he still has the race record time as well.

After that there were two more who won the Triple Crown in a relatively short period of time, (I remember reading an article about whether or not winning the Triple Crown had become too easy....) but not for the past 37 years. Here's the full list; only 11 horses have accomplished it:

919 | Sir Barton | John Loftus | H.G. Bedwell | J.K.L. Ross

1930 | Gallant Fox | Earl Sande | James Fitzsimmons | Belfair Stud

1935 | Omaha | William Saunders | James Fitzsimmons | Belair Stud

1937 | War Admiral | Charley Kurtsinger | George Conway | Samuel D. Riddle

1941 | Whirlaway | Eddie Acaro | Ben Jones | Calumet Farm

1943 | Count Fleet | John Longden | Don Cameron | Mrs. J.D. Hertz

1946 | Assault | Warren Mehrtens | Max Hirsch | King Ranch

1948 | Citation | Eddie Acaro | Ben Jones | Calumet Farm

1973 | Secretariat | Ron Turcotte | Lucien Laurin | Meadow Stable

1977 | Seattle Slew | Jean Cruget | William Turner Jr. | Karen Taylor

1978 | Affirmed | Steve Cauthen | Lazaro S. Barrera | Harbor View Farm

BTW, I was wrong saying that there were a number of horses to win the Derby and the Preakness but not the Belmont; in fact it appears there haven't been any...

Here's a link to a page with the list of horses that have won 2 out of three of the races. Just scroll down past the Derby winners. (I'm not going to copy and paste it because it's pasting completely jumbled and I'm not going to take the time to straighten it out) Apparently there hasn't been an single Derby/Preakness winner that failed to win the Belmont, so statistically speaking American Pharoh's chances are excellent.
