A real sport event is underway - with women
No, it's not that crap WNBA.
It's the Women's World Cup up there in Canada. And it's all on FOX (regular, FS1 and FS2). Yesterday's action was great - USA 3 Australia 1 (strong performance by the underdog Aussies). Nigeria stunned Sweden in a 3-3 tie, coming from behind twice to get a well-deserved point. Germany thumped Ivory Coast 10-0 - a consequences of expanding the competition to encourage growth of the sport in more countries. I'm not sure such a shellacking is all that encouraging to the minnows though!
Today's headline event is France vs. England but there are three other matches being played after that.
Tune in!

Depends on the type of life you plan on leading. Right now it seems to be far better than the career I've chose.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: A real sport event is underway - with women
I was going to post about this today too.
Germany and Brazil are the faves, but the Americans and the English have good strong contending teams. Next up for the Lady USAs is Sweden on Friday at 8PM, followed by Nigeria on Tuesday at 8PM. Then on to the round of 16!

20+ minutes in against France and the English team doesn't look so good. Maybe their tactic is to let France do all the attacking and then get 'em when they're tired?
USA / Sweden will be key in that group. A USA victory makes 'em #1

Re: A real sport event is underway - with women
I confess - I turned it off and went back to doing research on the shipping pilots of the Cape Fear River. And bonus! I found a "new" eyewitness account (1898) of the sinking of the General Lyon (1865). Back to football: good results for the tiddlers today but South Korea looks dead (so far) against Brazil.
I think France could ... go... all... the... way... but what you said about Germany is true and my goodness, Brazil has looked fluid tonight - smooth and efficient, if not quite up to their most sparkling in the first half. It's got to be between those three I reckon.
England looked so bad today I wondered if they'd sneakily put the men's team out there!

Re: A real sport event is underway - with women
Well I did my duty for international women's sport last night and wow - a zero-zero game. Not even a shoot out at the end to add the smallest frisson of excitement.
Total and complete snooze fest. The Red Sox getting ahead by 8 and still losing 10-15 was less painful. Well, ok, equally painful.
I'll hang in there and keep on rooting for the American ladies, but it's not for the love of the "sport."

Re: A real sport event is underway - with women
OH thanks for the spoiler!
I was out last night (dual birthday celebs for Lynn and Carole, Brian's wife). So it's half-time on the TV replay of the match and I came here to ask this:
Guin (and others) - there appears to be a subtle 'thing' going on with the TV commentary on some of the games. It may just be one chap - I haven't paid attention to the names of the commentators.
I detect a hint of male chauvinism - or rather condescension - in the failure of the man to properly critique the play on the field. The female commentator on the other hand seems to be accurate, concise and informative whether the play was good or bad.
The chap will say things like "oh they made a good move there but it didn't quite come off" - the woman says "that wasn't well thought out at all". The chap chirrups "good shot on goal" - the female person says "she took that too hastily when there were better options".
The man's unfailingly glowing remarks are (it seems to me) clearly because he's afraid of offending anyone by saying that crap is crap. I would be pleased to have the woman being the lead commentator and the man put into second spot so he is free to agree with a person who knows what she's talking about.
Or is it just me?

I thought that you were an orioles fan.
I watched a little World team tennis yesterday, martina hingas is still exciting... oo la la...
interesting format, but the asinine stadium announcer, and the party music, was off putting.
women s tennis is fun to watch but I think that they should play best of 5, in the major finals at least. the girls aren t even tired after 3
I thought that serena s theatrical performance in the semis at the French was pathetic

Commentator schedule for the first round:http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/06/06/w ... ed-by-fox/
Meade, believe me, I've spoiled NOTHING for you because NOTHING happens in the game. There was one sort of good moment and its been in the news already.
As for the commentating, I noticed the woman was spot on and smart, and the man background noise. It was about as boring as the game, so I wasn't riveted to the details much. But I'll pay closer attention next time -- it will give me something to focus onzzzzzzzzzz.
Wes, Orioles and Red Sox both. When they play each other, I don't care who wins. I've spent almost every summer of my life up here (either the Cape or coastal Maine), and I've lived here full time for almost half my life now (CT, VT, MA), so while Baltimore is "home" so is New England. Mind you, none of that matters to the parochial locals. Despite committing to live and work here, buying property, paying taxes, even being an elected official, I didn't grow up here and don't have generations of family history in New England, so I'll always be a "foreigner."

Nice job USA women shutting out Nigeria and taking the division. Sydney Leroux didn't get much playing time but I love watching her play. Nigeria's goalkeeper had some excellent saves but one got through, and that was enough.

Indeed - it's a pity the USA didn't make much of an impression playing against 10 but job well done. The surprise is Australia finishing 2nd - which means someone is going to get a nasty shock having to play Sweden as a #3 team! No competition should have to lose a goalie named Precious this early though!

USA wins against the upstart Colombians! Still no goals against, for the American defense!
The Ozzies knock out Brasil. France, Canada, China and England still standing. Plus the winner of Japan/Netherlands tonight.
And it's all still pretty boring, but I'm trying to stay awake.

That's 'cause you're not watching with me. (I'll be in Baltimore at game time on Friday; where will you be?)Guinevere wrote:And it's all still pretty boring, but I'm trying to stay awake.

Germany looking very good though... made mincemeat of Sweden for almost 90 minutes and then showed some defensive mind-farts. I forgot to watch the US game last night, after specially telling Margaretta that I'd be down in the basement at the big TV (which I was). This only getting two or less hours sleep each night for the past month+ is really beginning to tell.
