Nine people have died in a shooting at a historic African-American church in Charleston in the US state of South Carolina, officials say.
City police chief Gregory Mullen said eight of the victims were killed inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday evening, while another person died shortly afterwards. Police are now searching for a white male suspect in his 20s. "I do believe it was a hate crime," Mr Mullen said.
The church's pastor, state Senator Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed, civil rights activist the Rev Al Sharpton tweeted.
A meeting was going on at the time of the shooting at about 21:00 local time on Wednesday (01:00 GMT Thursday) at the church on Calhoun Street. In a tweet, Charleston police wrote: "Suspect in shooting on Calhoun St is a w/m approx 21 slender small build wearing a grey sweat shirt blue jeans timberland boots clean shaven." Speaking at a news briefing later, Mr Mullen said: "There were eight deceased individuals inside of the church. Two individuals were transported to [the hospital]. One of them has died.
"At this point, we have nine victims in this hideous crime that has been committed. "It is unfathomable that somebody in today's society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives," Mr Mullen said. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley described the shooting as "the most unspeakable" tragedy.
South Carolina Senator Tim Scott tweeted: "My heart is breaking for Charleston and South Carolina tonight."

What a twisted, evil fuck...
Given the pictures they have I've got to believe they're going to identify him pretty soon:

That's a pretty distinctive haircut, and his car's got some sort of vanity plate.
I just hope they catch up to this bastard before he hurts anyone else.

Re: Church massacre
...and while I m rebuking people. the group of folks here who are taking potshots at Texans, while they are still searching for the bodies of their children, ripped from their arms in the floods , really need to do some soul searching.
the AME church has been good to me. I was married at the one in Plymouth Ma back in 1999 or so. didn t last, but that wasn t the churches fault.
there are 2 black churches within sight of my house.
after the Easter massacre of Christians at the university in Africa. I put a cross, that I had built for a church display a couple of years ago, on my saw horses and painted it white and erected it in my back yard, as a display of my unwavering faith in god , and as a symbol of my solidarity with African Christians.
there is also a family in my neighborhood who has become muslim. I can tell you that mean looking men, and women walking down my street in floor length , black, heavy clothing, in full hijab, in 95 degree heat and full sun, looking at my cross, is a bit frightening.
god help the folks from that church. in Jesus' name I pray. amen.

Re: Church massacre
Sorry wesw but a mass shooting IS a perfect time to talk about gun control - it's not likely he would have left a bunch of dead victims if he'd stormed the church with a buck knife instead.

Riiiiiiiiigggghhhhht .... WTF does this have to do with anything in this thread and why are you afraid of your neighbors for subscribing to a different religion?wesw wrote: there is also a family in my neighborhood who has become muslim. http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/201 ... -roof.htmlEverything Known About Charleston Church Shooting Suspect Dylann Roof
The FBI has named Dylann Storm Roof, 21, of Columbia, South Carolina, as the suspected killer of nine people at a black church in Charleston. Roof was previously arrested on April 26 on a trespassing charge and was awaiting moderation. A sparse Facebook page shows an image of Roof in a jacket with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
Roof's father gave him a .45-caliber pistol for his birthday, according to uncle Charles Cowles. The uncle said he recognized Roof from the police's photo and "described him as quiet and soft-spoken," according to Reuters.
Many of his Facebook friends, including those from his high school, are black. The cousin of the church’s pastor who was killed quoted a survivor who said Roof told the church: “I have to do it. You’re raping our women and taking over the country. You have to go.”
Charleston police say Roof drove waway from the church in a black Hundai, license plate LGF 300.

Re: Church massacre
Here's a link to the friends section of his Facebook page; many of them are black:

Also, apparently he put up this photo of himself with the jacket with the old SA and Rhodesian flags about a month ago, so maybe his obsessive racism is a fairly recent development in his pathology...

Re: Church massacre
friggin little Nazi. they ought to drop him off in south Africa with his little apartheid jacket on.
Re: Church massacre
Don't call him crazy (or words of similar import). He is evil.
Nor is he indicative of any trend or movement or group or phenomenon - other than one fucked-up, narcissistic bastard trying to make himself immortal.
And he's apparently stupid, to boot.

Re: Church massacre
Sure, because no black church in the U.S. has ever been targeted for violence by a white racist until now.dgs49 wrote:Nor is he indicative of any trend or movement or group or phenomenon.
There has always been a subset of white Christian racists in your country that believe the best way to teach blacks "their place" is to blow up, burn up or shoot up black churches.
And there always will be, so long as apologists like you continue pretending otherwise.

Re: Church massacre
CNN is reporting that the scumbag has been caught...
If this is true, I'm a little disappointed; I was hoping that he'd either off himself or force the cops to do it...
Well, at least South Carolina has the death penalty.

I just heard (on the radio) about him being caught too.
Re: Church massacre
The age and strange comments attributed to him suggest mental illness.
A gun for his birthday, how nice. If you give schizophrenics powerful guns and plenty of ammunition they stop hearing the voices and are less anxious.
I don't know what the Moe Howard haircut says though.

What Sue said.
And, you owe Gob an apology. Just because he believes our gun obsession is wacked, and he has an issue with religion, doesn't mean he'd ever subscribe to the horror that happened in SC last night. evil:

"becoming"?
Oh and I agree with the lady folk and all who agree with them.

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
Re: Church massacre
well rube thinks it s a joke. that says a lot.
I will say that with little Nazis, blackpanthers , far left extremists, and muslim extremists all trying to start a civil war in America, it is not wise to disarm the good people.
it is not wise to even try. stop dividing. stand together and stand our ground.
no apology for gob either, if you villainize and demonize people long enough and persuasively enough, they become evil and villains in the view of many, and are targeted with hate.
just ask the jews.
