They are still swimming because if they don't, they suffocate. This is one of the fascinating facts about sharks.wesw wrote:a SEVENTH person got shark bit this MONTH. why are they still swimming?

Beat me to it Meade.

Re: people are stupid in the carolinas....
my son just now returned from a vacation to that exact area, his girlfriend is from there and they did the family visit thing....
he couldn t believe that people were still swimming either, he didn t get in the water.
when the sharks are in the surf its time for fishing, not swimming.....
I can understand the first two getting bit , maybe even three, but after the third person got bit I would think that pretty much everyone would figure it out.....
ETA- good one meadster....

It's pretty much the same for people arguing that secession was an OK vernal sport in them southern parts. They keep getting their asses kicked but keep on swimming back out.I can understand the first two getting bit , maybe even three, but after the third person got bit I would think that pretty much everyone would figure it out...

Re: people are stupid in the carolinas....
the old thing about mistaken identity doesn t fly in most of these recent attacks either. these sharks are biting getting beat off and biting again and again. some of these sharks are trying to eat these folks. they eat sea mammals and birds, we are fair game too I guess.
Re: people are stupid in the carolinas....
Breaking news, people behave stupidly every where. Apparently, according to one or more studies posted on this venerable BBS, people on average are getting stupider, so it follows more would act stupidly. As for going where the sharks are

I might opt for the Carolina version.

I might opt for the Carolina version.
Re: people are stupid in the carolinas....
Well of course they are, when you provide them with that kind of positive reinforcement...these sharks are biting getting beat off and biting again

And people keep getting into cars when 32,700 of them died in 2012.
The US averages just 19 shark attacks each year and one shark-attack fatality every two years. Meanwhile, in the coastal U.S. states alone, lightning strikes and kills more than 37 people each year.
I'm with them. The odds are still pretty good that you won't get bit.

Of course, one of the reasons shark bites are so rare is that people stay out of the water when sharks are present or there have been recent shark bites.

I would go swimming. With my flippers, mask, snorkel and speargun. Waters pretty clear on the outer banks, I should be able to see it coming.

A self-cancelling statement in light of the thread topic.

The latest victim is from Wareham, MA and was formerly the editor of the largest paper south of Boston - the Patriot Ledger. He is only listed in "fair" condition in the hospital.
I swim. I won't stop swimming. The water here is still quite cold, but I'll pay more attention too.

I have scuba dived near sharks, even the more aggressive ones (I once saw a hammerhead, confirmed later as one by the dive master, less than 100 feet away), and they mostly leave people alone. I'm not sure why the surf is becoming a buffet for them, but I would avoid swimming where that occurs in a cluster of attacks (although it might be fun to go under in a shark cage like on shark week to watch them).
Re: people are stupid in the carolinas....
hey! I used to read the patriot ledger!
it went well with linguisa (sp) and eggs.....
I won t be a smartass about the south of boston thing.....
...tho the new York times might quibble....
guin, if 7 people had been attacked in cape cod bay over the last 30 days, would you still take a dip?

My guess is Bull sharks. Very agressive and have been know to frequent shallow waters and even brackish and fresh water (feeder streams) areas in search of food (and are not picky in what they eat).Big RR wrote:I have scuba dived near sharks, even the more aggressive ones (I once saw a hammerhead, confirmed later as one by the dive master, less than 100 feet away), and they mostly leave people alone.
