Craigslistlieder

Post by Scooter »

Has anyone ever heard of these? I am no music connoisseur, but my oldest and dearest friend is a singer who introduces me to stuff that I wouldn't otherwise come across, and he sang a few of these at a recital he gave yesterday, so I looked them up when I came home. They were written by a guy named Gabriel Kahane, whom I had never heard of but who is supposedly considered pretty hot shit in that world, and as the title suggests, the pieces are based on Craig's List ads that he has read.

They are clearly not catchy tunes that anyone would find themselves humming on the subway, but somehow he manages to draw you into the story - the last one there, Opera Scene, as my friend was singing it, I found myself (and others around me said the same thing) weighing the pros and cons of $550/month rent in Manhattan vs. having a roommate who would be trying to stick ice cubes down my shirt, and how I might minimize the chance of that happening.

Anyway, take a listen, see what you think. For those who think these pieces are beneath them, Audra McDonald has performed them in concert.

Repulsive crap at 0.22 - assume rest is the same. Birds of a feather.

Scooter: On you recommendation I listened to Opera Scene, which I though was engaging and pretty humorous both musically and lyrically.

I may turn the doorknob
I may turn the doorknob
But a stern word is enough
To send me on my way

I'll have to listen to the others when I have more time. Thanks for the tip!

I'll tell you what's truly :loon ...

It's like having your choice in baseball teams criticized by a Cleveland Indians fan ... :P
