Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
in a democracy, where change is a given, a change in law and/or policy is to be expected by any elected official. it s the nature of the beast

You're right, I deleted it and should never have posted it.MajGenl.Meade wrote: BTW noting that "it's mean but it's funny" has never been an acceptable defense for us

Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
I am very sorry for my joke about Kim Davis's appearance. I should have come up with something wittier and clevererer and more high-minded, but often I am lazy and settle for the dumb insult. I also laugh at slapstick, particularly those videos of cat fails, and that time Terry Gross fell off her chair introducing an interview with Henry Kissinger. I know that I am weak in this regard, and I have no defense.
GAH!

Humbly ask for your character flaw to be removed.

Don't remove it, I rely on that sense of humor from time to time!

Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
My last post was mean, but it was funny and I'm not deleting it. (Perhaps I should not have included the quote from rubato's post, though.)
And as I've already pointed out in a previous post, she took an oath to "faithfully execute the duties of my office without favor, affection or partiality, so help me God." If she is as much a God-fearing Christian as she professes pretends to be, that should mean a LOT more to her than it appears to.MajGenl.Meade wrote:Her duties didn't change either, oldr. Her job is to issue many kinds of licenses required by law, among them "marriage licenses". It is not to issue "heterosexual marriage licenses" - there is no such thing.
She is in essence deciding who can and cannot get married - which the court has already decided. What she can do is to decide that if she cannot in good conscience issue a license to homosexuals to get married, she must turn down the entire job and resign.

[pessimistic Christian mode] But those are acts that have already occurred and can therefore be forgiven. She is being asked to aide in the commission of a future sin and therefore it cannot be forgiven. [/pessimistic Christian mode]
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

I'm pretty sure the third commandment doesn't allow her to just ignore an oath; those things don't just expire like a magazine subscription. The only way for her to extricate herself from it would be to resign the office for which she swore to execute the duties.

BULLY CULTURE
Poking fun of Kim Davis' appearance and morality views has become a national pastime. It's the quickest and cheapest way to feeling better about ourselves. And, unabashedly, I am guilty as charged.
Apparently our inherent human nature makes leading by good example an almost impossible task. Sadly, as long as it continues to flow from the top down it's asinine to think our children should behave any better.

Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
Your previous post seemed to hector me just a little - but perhaps I didn't really follow it properly - and here you are saying exactly what I said: resign the office. Oh well.... my misapprehension, I feel fairly sure.Econoline wrote:I'm pretty sure the third commandment doesn't allow her to just ignore an oath; those things don't just expire like a magazine subscription. I do note that she did not (technically, which means actually) swear unto God or by God. What the words she said mean are, "May God help me to do those things". This does not change at all our conclusion that her correct action was to resign the position, not thwart the law.
And Sue/Guin - I'd be happier if you didn't feel any need to delete jokes, even cruel ones. But your call, of course. I don't see anything wrong in the jokes - as long as we all recognize that we do these things from time to time. I've deleted one or two myself that I thought too shameful.

What others do/post/say is not for me to judge.
Although I am still wondering about "lesbian fashion sense" and what pictures showed it.
Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
yeah, now no more making fun of any politicians.
no more calling the republican field clowns.
no more trump hair jokes
no more pantsuit jokes
no more criticizing Hillary s dishonesty.....
it s a slippery slope and a fine line.
there is a difference I think in making fun of a person s natural physical appearance and making fun of the way they CHOOSE to appear.
there is also a difference between humor and mean spiritedness.
hard to tell sometimes. every instance is unique.

There is no "right" not to be offended.

Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
Here's my suggestion:
Somebody wants to make a joke about Ann Coulter having the body of an anorexic meth head...?
let 'em do it...
Or somebody wants to make a joke about Hillary Clinton having an ass so big it can be seen from The International Space Station...?
Or Christ Christie being a pie eating king; Or Donald Trump having a live ferret nesting on his head....
Or Rosie O'Doughnuts being called...
Rosie O'Doughnuts...
So what?
These are public figures; they can handle it....they're big boys and girls...(some of them are really big...)
So how about we agree that engaging in rude remarks about, (body, hair, whatever) when applied to public figures is fair game, and will no longer be the source of chastisement...?
(He asked, expecting a self-righteous rejection...

Re: Stopping a tidal wave is the next trick
So her recorded sins on that picture all happened before 2011 and before she was convicted of sin, repented and accepted the forgiveness and salvation of God? Just like me and most other Christians. Therefore irrelevant to this issue.
