U.S. Open

Post by Guinevere »

Serena v. Venus tonight. I respect them both, and have many reasons to root for both. I also have tickets to the Ladies Final on Saturday, and would love to see tennis history made. Let's have some good tennis regardless!!

I've been watching some of this...

I've been rooting for Venus...

She's the underdog, she's 35, she hasn't won a major in seven years...

After losing the first set 6-2, she came back to win the second 6-1...

But she really struggled to get the set point; it looked like the energy was starting to leave her...

She's down 3-0 in in the final set...

I admire Venus as well, especially her sticking with the sport and still placing well in majors without having any championships in a long time to spur her on. But Serena is just an amazing player; I'd love to see her against some of the men and bet she'd do well.

The right sister won -- it was a really good match, despite how it looks from the score.

We've talked about Serena endlessly, and I'm not going to repeat myself except to say that I've really seen her transformation in the last three years. Maturity has been good for her.

Venus probably has one more year left -- she wants to play into 2016 so she can go to the Olympics one more time. I expect Serena will be playing into her mid-30s, or until she gets bored again, although I don't see that happening any time soon.

Go Serena! A few more victories will cement her title as greatest ladies tennis champion of all time.

Six more will make her the winningest in the four majors - in the Open era. But not the greatest - Margaret Court is unlikely to lose that honor, what with the tiny racket n'all.

Mind you, I'd guess Ms. Williams would have crushed Ms. Court head-to-head

As in most sports, you can't compare the stars from different eras head to head (well you can, but not equitably). The equipment is so different, not to mention the conditioning, nutrition, and the overall support for sports development. They are both great champions, each dominant in their own time. That's all one needs to know as far as I am concerned.

With all due (and considerable) respect to Margaret Court, who has perhaps the best tennis name of all time, she had nowhere near the number of great players to compete against. That is, the difference between the best, the 5th best, the 10th best, etc. was far greater in the 1960s/70s than what Serena has faced (similarly with Steffi Graf, whom Serena would already have passed if the deranged fan had not derailed Seles' career at its peak). What Serena has already accomplished is greater than Court's outstanding career.

Dammit, and damn it all. I was worried this match would be a let down for Serena, and it was.

At least I can enjoy the match tomorrow without being tense.

no way!

I watched until the first set ended.

darn.

what did vinci do?

did she drop shot her, and run her around, and spin her, til she was worn out or what?

that was the best strategy in my view

Serena was just flat after the first set and as nervous as I've seen her - over 40 errors. Vinci played solid fundamental tennis and had nothing to lose.

That phenomenal third gear Serena has exhibited all year when she needed it never appeared.

She lost? Wunderbar! Wish I'd watched it now. We have an all Italian final - #26 vs unseeded? Amazing!

Now for tonight and Roger rolling over Stan (hope hope) and the Joker losing (some hope!)
