I survived the Paris suburbs just fine, in May. I didn't cover my head. I wore short skirts, short sleeves, and a scoop neck on my tops. As for the jerks running islam from Saudi Arabia, please. Yes, Mecca and Medina are there, but all sects of islam are welcome, not just shia or sunni or whatever. The jerks run nothing but their own small groups. They're loud and do a lot of horrible things, but they're far from a majority.

FWIW, a number of years ago I stayed around Marble Arch in London (a predominantly Arabic/moslem area) with may family (my wife, MIL, and two adolescent girls) shortly after the first subway bombing (we were actually there for the second) and we had no problem; some of the aggressive panhandlers in other areas were far more of a bother than anything there. They didn't wear burquas or cover up and we came and went all hours of the day or night without incident; I even went into a couple of bars and smoked a hookah or two and talked with some of the locals. Seems like Guin had the same sort of experience in Paris.

What so many Americans don't seem to get is that NOBODY "runs" Islam. There is no Muslim Pope. Even the numerous extreme terrorist Islamist groups don't agree with each other about much of anything. The sects that get the most attention would certainly like you and the rest of the world to believe that they "represent" the whole of Islam, but they don't. They are a tiny, tiny, tiny minority of the 1.57 billion Muslims in the world.

I try not to judge Christianity as a whole by the worst behavior of the worst of its adherents, and I extend the same courtesy to other religions too.

The real question ain't whether the Prez is a Muslim, or whether he needs defending, but the condemnation of an entire religion and its members based on the actions of extremists. Clearly the vast majority of Muslims are not members of or supporters of extremists groups. As LJ mentioned in a different thread, even Bush II made that point in the post-9/11 discussions. Apparently, however, much of the Republican Party (and a group of people who post here), fail to understand that point.
