Blue Jays fans sign petition to open roof of Rogers Centre for Game 5

Hundreds of Toronto Blue Jays fans have signed a petition to open the roof of the Rogers Centre when the team takes on the Texas Rangers in Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday.

In the Change.org petition, the anonymous creator cites the Blue Jays’ home-game record as reason for wanting the dome to be open for pivotal game.

The team won 38 games and lost 14 at the Rogers Centre with the roof open. The Blue Jays won only 11 and lost 14 games with the dome’s roof closed.

“Let's give (the Blue Jays) all the support we can and get the dome opened up for Wednesday,” the creator wrote in the petition site.

During the MLB playoffs, all decisions about venues and scheduling are made by league officials instead of teams or stadium management. (ed - these would be the same league officials that gifted game 2 to the Rangers with a series of bogus calls that weren't even close)

With Blue Jays fans already frustrated by what they call controversial calls by umpires during the team’s post-season, the creator said opening the roof of the stadium is the least MLB officials can do.

“Now, there have already been some iffy calls made by the umpires in this series, so their opinions shouldn't be given too much credit,” they said. “Weather permitting, the Toronto Blue Jays should be allowed to play with the roof of their stadium open.”

So far, more than 8,200 people have signed the petition, which is circulating on social media with the hashtag #OpenTheDome.

The Blue Jays avoided elimination from the post-season by winning Games 3 and 4 against the Rangers. The ALDS is now tied at two games each.

The series will be decided on Wednesday at the Rogers Centre.
Gee, I can't imagine why the league would want to create conditions that favour a U.S. team...oh, that's right, an all-U.S. World Series would mean bigger box office, sponsor revenue, etc.

Let the league do their best to rig the game. We shall overcome.

Now I'm in a quandary. I had really wanted the Mets to beat the Dodgers, but now I really really want to see the Cubs beat the Dodgers.

If the Cubs end up playing the Mets, though, I don't know who I'll root for.

On the other side, Go Jays!

I have nothing against the Mets, but as the Cubs going all the way will put four Benjamins in my pocket, I have no conundrum over who to root for... 8-)

Fox Sports 1. So far up the dial I've never been there before. Royals - Astros. Does anyone care?

Channel 408 on the dial here...

The only other time I've ever watched it was a year ago when they carried the first Giants playoff series...

I tuned in to the last three innings of the Jays game, and from what I heard in the post game analysis I wish I'd seen the whole thing...

No interest in the Astros-Royals...

I take it that this is the sentiment among our friends to the north? Helps explain the anger at the controversial call today (trash and bottles heaved on the field). However, with the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels out, there really is no MLB "favorite" in the AL. The NL has the Mets, Dodgers, Cubs -- all huge media darlings. As a result, the ultimate victor from Toronto, Texas, Kansas City and Houston, carries little relevance to the attention of the remainder of the playoffs. But I'm happy the Jays got to the next round.

I actually don't think that the league, (or the networks) would be all that unhappy with a US-Canuck World Series...

The Toronto metro area has a respectable population of over six million:
The Greater Toronto Area is a metropolitan area in Canada. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 6,054,191, and the census metropolitan area had a population of 5,583,064. Wikipedia
On top of that, you could probably expect a fair amount of interest from the rest of Canada as a viewer audience...

And it also might help stimulate a higher level of interest in the US beyond the metro area of whichever team winds up representing the NL...

You know:

"USA! USA! USA!" 8-)

The national pride angle could juice the audience numbers on both sides...
