Indeed, they're doing a tough, and very often thankless, job. My thanks to all vets.

Thanks to all Veterans for their service, and to all serving in uniform today.

So, who amongst the denizens of this board has served?

I was in ROTC and the reserves during Vietnam, but accepted a separation when the war ended and they didn't need as many people. Because of this, I don't really consider myself a veteran of any sort (nor have I sought any veterans benefits or even looked what I might be eligible for; I just wanted to delay entry into the army until after we ended our participation in the war and, while I was willing to serve, I happily accepted the separation), but I did get a close up look at life in the military and the trials it presents.

The closest I came is my late Spousal Unit; he was in Vietnam for two tours in the late 60s/early 70s (don't remember exact dates). He was drafted initially, then went to OCS. IIRC, he was a Civil Affairs officer, running a small group of specialists, doing things like building water treatment systems for SV villages. I wish he'd written about it (or that I had a better memory...).

What I'm wondering is, what is the point of posting "thank you" messages in a place where no one who deserves any thanks will actually read it? Who is the intended audience and to what end? :shrug

Isn't it good enough that we give thanks? Does it have to be directed at a specific individual? Can't we just send thanks into the universe?

(those are mostly rhetorical questions, I know the answer ... or at least my answer)

Since @W is away, I'm going to say what I suspect she would say were she here:

[@W]"Of all the things you could choose to get a burr up your ass about Meade, you pick people expressing their thanks to all those who have served for this country? Your knees must really be hurting today..."[/@w] 8-)

You forgot "aging fat body".

I guess it was the "expressing their thanks to" part that intrigued me. To who? To me, you, rubato, Gob, etc.? Go express them to a veteran. But NGF counts... so that's just fine. Asked and answered.
