Well for really old I would say Egypt, Greece, India, and Persia with a little Stonehenge, thrown in to leaven.
For recent-old Europe is a good starting point , perhaps, with Italy bridging the ancient and modern eras with the Mayan and Incan civilisations doing the same in the new world.
And, of course, compared to us, everything looks old. And a little tired.
I don't know of any opportunities that would allow me to live cheaply in Europe while making a decent salary, but the places I'm looking at are close enough to do some serious traveling in my off time. There are many places I'd like to see, as I've been almost no where thus far in life.
But there's always HDTV if I don't get there in person, I suppose. And books.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Travel to France is cheap right now! Go for it. And they are very nice if you learn a few words in French.
We had last minute additions to the T-day meal, two material science graduate students from UCSB. There was some overlap with I do for a living which made for good dinner conversation. The table extension came out to accommodate but everything else worked to plan. Stuffing was all gone along with the brussels sprouts with pancetta, and nearly all the gravy but there are t-bird, spuds, and 1 pie equivalent out of three. A friend brought a lovely bottle of Dom Perignon to toast with at the beginning of the meal along with a magnum of Rombauer chardonnay with disappeared like water into the Sahara sands. A nice Rombauer Merlot, and a Ridge Zinfandel all expired at our benefit and I think we finally got rid of that Mumms champagne which has been in the cupboard for the last year. (nice looking bottle but nothing special to drink IMO).
We were a little late for the walk between dinner and dessert and it was getting into dusk and cold but everyone, including the dog, enjoyed the diversion.
I'm busy doing cleanup today. The second round of dishes is in the dishwasher ( a Bosch 900 I bought for mi esposa earlier this year. Her sister had one and it was creating appliance envy which had to be cured. If you're married you will know what I mean.) I'll take down the extra table, vacuum, do some assorted handwashing. Clear the decks. Great fun to have people over for a really nice meal.
Still in pain from playing football on T-day. Caught a TD pass, had a couple of sacks and an interception. But we lost by a TD. Good to se the ol' gang.
Ate at the sister-in-laws house then off to my cousins house (son of Aunt Dottie who is dieing of bladder cancer) for desert. Aunt Dottie always had Christmas at her house. Don't know what is happening this year.
All of you please stop. It was a nice thread about the holiday. There is NO NEED to drag families or family status into the mudswilling that goes on around here. Not now, not ever.

my puppy girl and possum kitty finished up the last of the turkey and ham leavings today.
the puppy turned two on thanksgiving this year, and she got a nice turkey carcass the next day after I had picked the meat off. minus the sharp breast bones of course. I ve doled out the parsons nose and leg bones (minus the sharp spikes in the legs of course), and the wing bones and tips and ham rind and fatty pcs over the past week. (they got their fair share of meaty bits too)
they deserved it.
the kitten has caught 5 baby mice already! I think I ve caught all the adults in traps. the kitten got his little head smacked by a trap yesterday....
