Ms. Vinci is a class act:
“The best moment of my life,” said Vinci, who embraced the occasion thoroughly, cupping her hand to her ear and exhorting the crowd after winning a spectacular rally, and crying in her chair after the upset.

Vinci, who had never won a set against Williams in four previous matches, also apologized.

“For the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam and everything,” she said. “But today is my day. Sorry, guys.”

Instead of the 33-year-old Williams playing for the Grand Slam in the final on Saturday, it will be 33-year-old Flavia Pennetta facing Vinci, 32, in an all-Italian match that will also feature the oldest players in a women’s major final — in terms of combined age — in the Open era.

The crowd also showed class. Despite what I'm sure was enormous disappointment, they really warmed to her; she got a great reaction:

I'm proud of my fellow citizens for reacting with that kind of good sportsmanship rather than with boos and catcalls...

When was the last time somebody unseeded made it to the final match of the US Open? I'll be rooting for her.

I was having a chuckle this morning at all the rich folks stuck with prime price tickets expecting to see a Grand Slam epoch-making event....

... now (and I say this just to confirm all the worst opinions anyone has of me), they're left hoping the good looking one wins

Hey - I was there and I'm not rich! I would have liked to have seen Serena going for the slam - that's why I bought the tickets the day she won Wimbledon. But, despite that disappointment, it was a great day in Queens.

My frenchies won the men's doubles (another Murray choked on his serve a couple of times), and the ladies final was a lot of fun. The first couple of games seemed flat, then they found their stride and played to a tiebreak with some great rallies and fun shot-making by two doubles specialists. It's too bad Vinci ran out of steam in the second set - we all wanted more tennis. On the other hand, the timing was perfect - the trophy presentation had just ended when the skies, threatening all afternoon, opened up and rain poured down.

Ashe was full, the fans were loud and appreciative of the work these two did to get to the final. The Italian President, IOC Chair, and Ambassador to the U.S. attended and got a standing ovation from the crowd. The ladies were charming and funny - even sitting together in Vinci's chairs waiting for the presentation. I've never seen that before. When Penetta announced her retirement, the place roared - we wanted them both to come back next year!

And oh yes - I got to watch my Swiss boyfriend on the practice courts in between the doubles and the ladies. Can't wait to see his match today!

So a great cap to a really special sports week for me - I also ended up at Gillette on Thursday night to see the Pats unfurl the championship banner and thrash the Steelers. I'm a lucky lucky girl :D :D :D

Sounds like a wonderful day, Guin.

Last night, what with the rain delay before the wrong man won, my wife and I got to watch a reply of the Farewell Serena match from Friday. We noted how out of sorts Serena appeared, even after winning the first set.

We both concluded that she was horrified by the hideous outfit she had on and by the betrayal of her entourage in failing to speak truth to power.

I BELIEVE IN "TYPE"

Post by RayThom »

She's not my type. I have no problem with skin color or height. I'm just not into women who weigh more than I do. Serena is way too large for me to appreciate what she's trying to sell to the masses in these photos.

Holy shit, how much do you weigh????? It's hard to believe it's a LOT less than Serena . . . She weighs 150lbs.

Why does it seem that the more fame and prestige a woman gets, the sluttier she dresses?

As tall as she is I would guess her at a minimum of 180 possibly 200lbs. Muscle ain't light.

I actually thought she was taller than this:
Height:
5 ft. 9 in. (1.75 metres)

Weight:
155 lbs. (70.5 kilos)

I weigh folks often. No lady wants to admit to weighing 180 let alone more. I would bet my house and career that irrespective of what you read or what she says she weighs she is no 150 or 155. Not a chance.

I am 5'10" and weigh in a resectable 158 (this morning) and look like a lightweight compared to her.

OFFS - the athlete of the year, perhaps the greatest of all time in her sport, and you "gentlemen" (except Rube) want to talk about her clothes and her weight?????????

I hope your daughters are never subjected to such derision and scorn for being unapologetically confident in themselves, but I doubt it, given the long history of how men treat women in this world. It's something you might want to think about.
