Carter has cancer

Post by Gob »

Poor sod, but 90 is a fair innings.
Former US President Jimmy Carter says recent liver surgery revealed that he has cancer and it has spread to other parts of his body.

The 90-year-old statesman underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver earlier this month.

He said he would reveal more "when facts are known, possibly next week".

Mr Carter will undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.

President Barack Obama wished Mr Carter "a full and fast recovery" in a statement released on Wednesday.

"Jimmy, you're as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you," Mr Obama said.

Leaving the White House in 1981, he has remained active carrying out humanitarian efforts with his Carter Center in recent years.

He founded the centre, which focuses on human-rights efforts and political mediation, soon after he left office.

He was later responsible for negotiating a 1994 nuclear disarmament pact with North Korea and has visited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in recent years.

A Democrat from Georgia, Mr Carter was elected president in 1976.

He won the Nobel Peace prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives and his promotion of economic and social programmes.

The BBC interviewed Mr Carter in February about his efforts to eradicate guinea worm disease and in the South Sudan and Mali and river blindness in both Africa and Latin America.

He said then he was happy to still be travelling and doing work across the globe.

But in May, he returned early from a trip to observe elections in Ghana because he was "not feeling well".

Mr Carter has been recently promoting his latest book, A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety, which was released in July.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

A very good man, who has left the world a better place - may he not suffer long, cancer can be so cruel.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

I liked some of his presidential policies, had issues with others, but he showed his true colors when he left office. He was a skilled mediator (as the Camp David Accords demonstrated), he helped develop the CPR and their ADR training programs, he put his money and his time into many worthwhile charities, and is pretty well respected around the world (a rarity for an ex-president of the US).

I, too, hope he doesn't suffer long and that he has an easy death.

Although he was not one my admired presidents he still should be accorded the honorary title of President Carter; like one that will not be mentioned he did earn it. I hate cancer and would not wish it on anyone..
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

A truly great man who has set an example of a life well-lived.

The world is a better place for having him in it. No other president measures up after Eisenhower. And you can contrast his refusal to take "speaking fees" (bribes) to enrich himself with others swinish behavior.

Jimmy Carter announces he is cancer-free

Washington (CNN)Jimmy Carter's cancer is gone, the former president announced on Sunday.

"My most recent MRI brain scan did not reveal any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones. I will continue to receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments of pembrolizumab," Carter said in a statement.

Carter, 91, first revealed the news in front of a Sunday School class he was teaching at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.

Carter's health announcement was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Stephanie Wynn, a 12-year member of the congregation, confirmed Carter's comments to CNN.

According to Wynn, Carter said he'd gone for an MRI last week, and the scan's results showed that he is cancer-free. The congregation applauded the news, she said.

I was very glad to see this...

I'm not looking forward to the day this bitter, meddlesome old bastard finally croaks....

A full week of "tributes" to Jimmy Carter...Image

It will make television news pretty much unwatchable...

"Bitter"?????

I'll just be kind and ignore most of that post...but "bitter" definitely does not seem like a word that could be used to describe Jimmy Carter. He seems totally at peace with his own life and his own death, and ready to leave whatever happens to him personally in the hands of God.

Are you kidding?

Carter has never gotten over his bitterness about the American people's massive rejection of him in favor of Mr. Reagan; he's absolutely obsessed over it...(he even expressed it in the press conference where he discussed his cancer... ) He's also very bitter about the fact that while Mr. Reagan is widely considered a great President, he is considered as, well, not...

He becomes flustered and annoyed anytime anyone suggests that he's thought of as a better "former President" than "President", and immediately begins to talk about how (in his delusional mind) he was really quite a splendid President...He's the poster boy for "Legend In His Own Mind"...

And oh yes, he's also bitter that Presidents and secretaries of state don't come rushing to him for his wise counsel, (something else he expressed in that press conference, in a shot at Kerry)

He's extremely bitter that he doesn't get the kind of respect and regard that he believes is his due. It comes through almost every time he is interviewed or speaks in public.

"Bitter" is the very first word that comes to mind when I think of TIC...(Well, that and "incompetent" and "arrogant" of course)

I understand the Sanders campaign has admitted to "finding" the cancer in their own headquarters but deny knowing how it got there. There's a rumor going around that Clinton staffers "leaked" the spots in order to entrap their rival who thus far has been unable to afford spots of his own.

Oh and yeah, Jimmy Carter's 28-year-old grandson died suddenly over the weekend. Want to run that vomiting head again?

I agree.

Jimmy Carter, bitter? I've never heard nor read an interview with him which sounded bitter. I heard about the grandson. A sad day, but how like him to continue with bible study.

The 'bitter' charge is pure bullshit. Some people cannot stand the fact that he practices the values which other "Christians" only know by rumor and don't realize that by inventing lies they illustrate even more vividly the moral gulf between themselves and him.

I agree with rubato on this (but you already knew that). Maybe you should try listening without the Reagan-worshipping filters in yours.

Why does one even need Reagan-worshipping filters? Why be so angry and bitter about Carter. Reagan won. 'Nuff said.
