Just going to say that Cosby wasn't the only person of that era who thought that Cantharides was the way to get into a girl's pants.  There was a whole industry that grew up around stuff — yohimbine, amyl and butyl nitrite ('poppers'), horny goat weed, and body spray containing so-called pheromones, among others — that was supposed to make someone so randy that they wouldn't or couldn't say no.

And it wasn't the only thing... Dorothy Parker is well known for her brief epigram about how "Candy's dandy, but liquor's quicker".

True — that's basically what this is going to come down to; a he-said, she-said pissing match.  What the NY Daily Tabloid News is trying to do is turn this into an example of "where there's smoke there must be a fire" by emphasizing the preponderance of unfounded (and up to now, mostly unreported) allegations of behavior that happened a long, long time ago.

Sort of reminds me of an old joke:

An old timer in Scotland was in a bar, talking to a young man.  The Old Man says, "Lad, look out there to the field.  Do ya see that fence?  Look how well it's built.  I built that fence stone by stone with me own two hands.  I piled it for months.  But do they call me 'McGreggor-the-Fence-Builder'?  Nooo..."

And that's the sad point.  He's not going to have the time to be able to make people forget the past like Vanessa Williams, the former Miss America who was slut-shamed out of her crown, did.  No matter how this turns out, this — not his stage humor; not his ground-breaking role in "I Spy"'; not all the awards he won as Cliff Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" — is going to be Cosby's legacy.

I think it's more like the tabloids are taking advantage of the fact that authorities finally having enough evidence to bring a serial rapist to trial.

Vanessa Williams wasn't "slut shamed" she was stripped of the crown and as it turned out she has had a much better career than 9/10ths of "Miss America's" have.

One thing that got me, was the way Cosby showed up for his arraignment...

I realize the guy is 78, but up until just a few months ago, (when the deposition was released) he was keeping a very active schedule... touring all over the country with a 90 minute monologue routine...

Now he's so "decrepit" he needs two people to help him walk and can't even navigate a curb in one go...

He's even carrying a cane...something I've never seen him with before, even fairly recently...

I'm actually glad that Cosby turned out to be a serial acquaintance rapist; maybe this case will dispel some of the myths around what a rapist looks and acts like 'in real life' when he's not raping women. Too many Americans still think rapists are strangers in dark alleys and refuse to accept that the majority of rapists are 'nice' guys who you would never imagine are capable of forcing themselves on a woman friend/date/colleague/etc.

Oh hell yes! This miserable piece of shit for an excuse of a human being was all set to have a new TV series just prior to all this hitting the fan. He was quite well enough to do all that work, and it is long hours doing a show. He is an actor, acting.

(A) This is an extremely weak case, and unlikely to result in a conviction. There is no physical evidence of a crime, it was reported late, and the accuser is not, shall we say, pristine. Further, the accuser does not remember being sexually assaulted, only having physical sensations that are consistent with sexual assault. A good cross-examination could leave the accusation itself in tatters. There is a good likelihood that NONE of the other accusations will be admissible at trial, and at least a 50-50 chance that the incriminating deposition will also be tossed out, as the circumstances surrounding its public release are very dicey. Guilt beyond a reasonable doubt? Ain't happening.

(B) This is a case where there may not be any venue within the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where the jury pool is not already hopelessly compromised. Jury selection will be a never-ending circus.

Rape isn't about sex; whether the rapist has the insight to recognize it or not, he is compelled by the pleasure he gets from exercising power over another person and/or by hurting another person, not by sexual desire. A great many rapes don't result in orgasm/ejaculation by the rapist for this very reason, because the act is not primarily about sexual release.

eta: These are truths about the psychodynamics of rape that mental health professionals have learned over years of studying and treating sex offenders.

Obviously Cosby COULD have accessed any number of willing female sex partners as a famous and wealthy man; he opted to attack and brutalize women who trusted him because he 'got off' on the cruelty of treating women like inanimate objects devoid of rights or feelings.

I've been hearing, "Rape isn't about sex" for decades, and while I don't doubt that it is true in some cases, it is not universally apropos.

Having been a 20-year-old male in the distant past, I strongly suspect that "campus rapes" are manifestly "about sex" and not some psychotic need to dominate someone.

“The history about African-Americans is a history of the United States; but the true histories, not the propaganda that is standard in our nation’s history books,” Cosby told the newspaper group.

“The great writer, James Baldwin, said, ‘If you lie about me, then you lie about yourself.’ The revolution is in the home. There is something about someone saying, ‘I didn’t know that,’ that could cause a change in that person’s thinking.”

One of Cosby’s daughters, Evin, also released a statement about the allegations, saying they have wounded the entire family.

“The harsh and hurtful accusations…that supposedly happened 40 or 50 years ago, before I was born, in another lifetime, and that have been carelessly repeated as truth without allowing my dad to defend himself and without requiring proof, has punished not just my dad but every one of us,” she wrote.

“The public persecution of my dad, my kids’ grandfather, and the cruelty of the media and those who speak out branding my father a ‘rapist’ without ever knowing the truth and who shame our family and our friends for defending my dad, makes all of this so much worse for my family and my children.”

Unfriggin' believable...Cosby of course, has for decades been in the fore-front of African Americans expressing criticism for anyone using racism as an excuse for bad behavior, but now that his ass is up against the wall like OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson before him, he plays the race card...

It was his fame that enabled him to get away with his crimes, and shielded him from facing justice long ago...

I'm sorry Evin, I'm sure that the internet world being what it is, that you and your children and your siblings and their children, have been subjected to attacks that you absolutely do not deserve, and there is no excuse for that. Neither you nor they had anything to do with your father's behavior, and shouldn't be attacked for it. (Unlike your mother, who served as a fully aware enabler of your father's serial sexual abuse, and therefore is a legitimate target for criticism and condemnation)

But that having been said, it is your father who is responsible for this, so in blaming it on his vile behavior finally coming to the public spotlight, your condemnation is misplaced. The responsibility lies with him, and his vile behavior.

Cosby also said that he is (completely) blind – which his defense lawyers had previously disclosed in court papers.

"Blind" suggests sightlessness and it's a term Cos uses to elicit sympathy. His eyesight may very well be failing but his lack of sight would be categorized -- at worst -- as "legal blindness." Just watch him walking around with his carnival barker's cane. He's fully aware of his surroundings.

Shows a conference table with a bunch of men in suits sitting around it with one person standing, other visual hints this is a law firm. The caption: Our client has one million dollars. We charge a thousand dollars an hour. Any questions about how long this case will take?

This thing has dragged on so long the defense must be hoping the money runs out soon.

He's what — almost 80 years old?  He's obviously taking a page out of Aaron Hernandez's playbook.  If you die without having been convicted then the case is closed and it's as if you were never charged; or if you have been convicted but die before all your appeals have been exhausted, the first conviction is vacated and you are again 'not guilty'.
