Snow's a comin'

Post by oldr_n_wsr »

GET THE MILK, GET THE BREAD!!!! IT'S GONNA SNOW!!!! WE WON'T DIG OUT UNTIL ........ saturday evening.

You would think we never had snow before. :shrug :nana :loon

Snowpocalypse? bah.

Tractor has it's plow on and is ready.
Snowblower is tuned up and ready.
Snowmobile's are ready.
So am I. Fun times are coming.

East Coast braces for major winter storm, but will the snowpocalypse actually come?

The East Coast could be in for its first major winter storm of the season, with forecasters predicting a weekend of heavy snow, high winds and coastal flooding from Virginia to Maine.

Winter storm watches have been posted in parts of the mid-Atlantic as officials in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston are bracing for blizzardlike conditions along the I-95 corridor beginning as early as Friday. A blizzard watch has already been issued for the D.C. metro area.

Up to 50 million people could be affected by the storm, which already has a name: Jonas.

"Forecasters are monitoring the possibility of a major winter storm affecting the Northeast later this week, including the possibility of heavy snow for the urban corridor extending from Washington, D.C., to New York and Boston Friday into Sunday," the National Weather Service said. "Based on the anticipated storm track, as much as 1 to 2 feet of snow is possible near and northwest of I-95. Coastal flooding is also likely."

Those along the storm's 1,000-mile path will see at least six inches of snow, while a large swath stretching from the West Virginia mountains to southeastern Pennsylvania could see up to three feet.

While a high-impact snowstorm is likely, the exact timing and snowfall totals are subject to change.

"There remains considerable uncertainty regarding snow amounts on the northern edge of Jonas' snow shield from Pennsylvania to southern New England," Weather.com noted.

Last year, a massive snowstorm that had millions along the Eastern Seaboard hunkering down pummeled Boston with more than two feet of snow. New York City and parts west, though, were spared the brunt of what "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart dubbed "Blizzapocalypsegeddon '15." (Remember CNN's "Blizzardmobile"? "Settle down, Batman," Stewart quipped. "It’s a Ford Explorer.”)

But that hasn't stopped some forecasters from sounding the proverbial alarm, particularly in Washington.

"Colossal storm to unload a foot of snow from D.C. to Philadelphia, NYC," AccuWeather.com declared.

Whatever happens, one thing is for certain: A winter storm that shares the name of a popular boy band will dump plenty of memes on the Internet.

Blah blah blah. I'm getting boarded up tomorrow, which is a shame because I'll miss the light from those two glass sliding doors. I really really really wanted a floodingless-winter this year. I don't mind the snow, but the flooding and storm surge is exhausting. Cross your fingers it isn't really bad and the storm stays south and moves east quickly!

We got snow last night. I stayed the night at work just in case no one came in. Of course it turned out to be less than anticipated.

Friday supposed to be major. I plan to be snug at home.

Weather.com says we're getting 5-8" around here on Saturday -- not hardly enough for a snowmergency, let alone the snowpocalypse. Plus, it's Saturday -- you don't really have to go anywhere, anyway. Rent some movies, make popcorn and hot chocolate. You'll be back to work Monday regardless.

Fercrissakes, it's winter, people! What else would you expect??????

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

I hope we get 2 feet or more. The wife wants me to paint the recently vacated daughters room. I would rather plow/snowblow the snow than paint.
I hate painting.

And even if we get a bunch of snow at the lake house, can't go very far on the snowmobiles as the lakes are not frozen enough. The lakes connect the trails.

A BELATED WHITE CHRISTMAS

Post by RayThom »

The metro areas from Philadelphia and New York City to Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island, and Boston will be in the zone where enough snow will fall to shovel and plow with blizzard conditions in some areas. Localized snowfall from New York City to southeastern Massachusetts can approach a foot. Many areas around Philadelphia will receive a foot of snow. More snow is possible should the storm take a slightly more northward track.

Within this zone, gusty winds and the clinging nature of the snow can bring down tree limbs and cause sporadic power outages. The greatest risk of more widespread power outages will be near the coast, where winds will be the strongest and snow the wettest.

Bullseye is DC or even further south in VA.

Wes if you're near the water, be careful. Storm surges for Delaware Bay and NJ coast are approaching Sandy levels and it's going to be an astronomically high tide too. I'll see if I can post a link to the storm surge forecast later in the AM.

Going to be messy here, but not as bad as it could be, I think. And hope.

thanks guin, we are about equally situated between the bay and ocean here in Delmar, and no rivers thru town, so we are good.

I even talked my landlord into getting a tree service to cut off the centuries old limb that hung over our house until a few weeks ago

no worries for us, but a nor easter w 70 mph winds, on a full moon will wreak havoc on many around here, and where you are....

Tuned up the generator last night which was the last piece of my storm equipment that needed tending to. That means there will be little to no snow/storm/power outages. :shrug

I was very good this year and got a new set of snow tires the first week of December (old ones weren't worn, but they were VERY old). Of course I knew that meant that we would get little or no snow this winter, and thus far I have been correct (it has snowed enough to stick on the ground exactly twice).
