Not sitting on your balcony in your underwear then?

I'm listening to my prescribed EMMI on-line information about total knee replacement. The surgery is on Tuesday next, bi-lateral and (frankly) it's a cause for some apprehension. Can I be at all sure that I'll bear up under the pain and not be a wimp? It's so important to work the new knees but my bionic friends have all experienced terrible pain - and they all just did one knee. So there's that.

Then there's that indefinable "I may not wake up again" that is probably experienced by everyone who goes through surgery. Partly it's listening to these EMMI lessons: there are minimal risks, they say. But then they keep on and on listing all the "minimal risks" until there seem to be quite a lot of them!

It's odd for Christians though. After all, if we don't survive surgery, we're off to a better place, so we believe. But no one actually wants to go (not if we're otherwise healthy anyway). I've got two books to finish writing and tons to read and....

Hey - this doesn't seem so random! But at night, random wonders wander where they will. Those two "concerns" seem to random around quite a lot lately

Meade--re "not waking up", I recall Dr Oz as saying on CBS once that you have as much chance of dying from Anesthesia as you do of dying from a haircut; I would imagine you'd have a greater chance of dying in a car accident on your way to the surgery. I understand the concern, but it is not based in reality.

As for the pain, my friends who have had it said it is bad, but not unbearable; having two knees done seems to be preferred because the pain doesn't appear to be additive, so I think you made the better choice. Expect the pain and perform your physical therapy and I'd bet you'll be fine.

And get well soon, I'd bet a lot of us would want you and your posts back.

Pain is not the same for everyone. Besides, you'll get good pain meds, so you can mix them with wine and find your happy place.

You should never pay attention to the risks of surgery. The risk will be very low if you have an experienced surgeon rather than someone from a temporary employment agency.

It's too early for you to go to that 'better place' but just to be safe it might be a good idea to write and read a couple books before next Tuesday.

It's quite normal for a person to be nervous about an upcoming surgery. (that has me a bit concerned since you aren't normal) Other than that, calm down. You will do fine and live to complain to all of us about the more serious things in life - like grammar and spelling.

That's your lot in life, Meade-añia... Can't blame ya...

In the famous last words of Rodney Dangerfield, and prior to entering the hospital when he went in for what I recall was knee surgery, when asked how long he would be hospitalized: "If all goes well, about a week. If not, about an hour and a half."

I have a friend who has had both knees replaced -- at different times, of course. Within weeks after each surgery he was ambulatory, with no assistance, and back to his old self in no time.

While in the hospital make sure God sees you reading your bible and hears you praying to him. He's sure to notice and heal you much quicker. Or so they say.

Once you're back home let me know and we can commiserate about all our surgical procedures. We can play "can you top this?" Good luck, you'll be fine.

I don't have to shoot my wife though, do I? Thanks LR & Ray - encouraging that. Dangerfield's line - great, I'll have to steal it!

One good thing about being out sick for most of the week is when two days in working and you desperately plea to yourself "is it Friday yet?" It is.

Routine operation. You will be fine. Will you be in rehab? A woman with whom I work had a double and her rehab was in a motel. Odd that.

All will be well.

Supposed to be in rehab 7-10 days... bummer. I bet they don't have the correct soccer channels - NBCSN, BEIN, FXSP1 and FSSN. A motel? Often associated with knee-tremblers, so perhaps not inappropriate! :-)
