NEW YORK — It's too cold in New York City for the annual Central Park Ice Festival.

The Central Park Conservancy says Saturday's event has been canceled.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the teens on Saturday for New York. But wind chills could drop to between zero and minus-10, and wind gusts could reach around 44 mph.

The free event was to feature ice-carving artists and music.

Last month, Central Park's free winter sports day called Winter Jam was canceled due to a major snowstorm.

It's winter. It gets cold. It snows. Deal with it.
Today is very "unwintery". 50+F and this just after it being 0F over the weekend.

The daughters pipes froze overnight saturday to sunday. I spent half of sunday in the crawl space with my heatgun warming the pipes. Got them unfrozen and was happy no pipes burst.
Tried to buy the pipe warmers but all the hardware stores were out of them. I had her leave teh faucets on a little bit overnight sunday. No frozen pipes on monday then it started warming up yesterday to today.

But after getting off to a good start in January, the last couple of weeks have been disappointing...

Where's El Niño? Climate experts say more rain on the way

Football fans were supposed to be wearing rain ponchos at the Super Bowl to protect themselves from an El Niño soaking.

Instead, they sat under a cloudless sky. Temperatures hit a record-breaking high of 78 degrees in Santa Clara on Sunday.

The glorious weather was welcomed, but as the sun continues to shine this week, many in drought-stricken California are beginning to ask, "Where's El Niño?"

"El Nino is still here," Bay Area meteorologist Jan Null said. "We typically see some warm weather in February. There's all this panic that I'm hearing. This is just one of those periodic nice spells that we typically get in the middle of winter."

National Weather Service forecaster Steve Anderson said the proof is in the ocean temperature. "Water temps around the equatorial Pacific are still three degrees above normal," Anderson explained. "That means El Niño is still here."

More rain is on the way, with the next storms expected to hit next Wednesday and Thursday. Beyond that, forecasters can't predict exactly what will happen.

"The rainy weather patterns associated with El Niño have shifted," Null explained. "Right now, we have a ridge over the West Coast. That will undoubtedly change.

"The big question is how much will it change when we get into the second half of February and into March? That we really don't know.

"If anyone tells you they know what will happen they're pulling your leg."

That said, Anderson says the National Weather Service can predict whether overall rain for the season will be above or below normal, and he says all forecasts says that by the time the rainy season ends in September we should be above normal.

"Any chance you get to enjoy some sunny warm weather you got to get on it because it probably won't last long," Anderson advised. "Spread your blanket out at the park or beach."

Looks like we're back into righteous rain pattern...

It started Friday, we got seriously hammered yesterday, more expected today and tonight...

Then showers Monday, a break on Tuesday, then right back into it straight through next weekend...

So far what was supposed to be the biggest el nino in decades is on track to produce ... what used to be an average rain year ... pre-global warming.


The 'new normal' appears to be drought.
