Humpf. I had forgotten about the opiate withdrawal. I had a bad back injury which led to traction in the hosp. followed by surgery. When they kicked me out they gave me codeine for the pain which I refused to take which led to opiate withdrawal.

Very unpleasant. Really not nice.

But I could have stopped it by taking the codeine and it wasn't worth it.

IMO pain is bad and you should take the drugs and deal with the withdrawal later on.

Thanks all - not dead yet. therapy has started and it's not too bad. Maybe that's the painkillers...

Things go well. They made a fuss in therapy - "See he had two done! You must be brave" No, not really - ignorance helps. Anyway, I've been blessed. Days of walking with the wheeled zimmer, manipulating a reacher to pick up miscellaneous beanbags tossed around the gym floor by Occupational Therapists. Then I got home a week ago Saturday and used none of the equipment we'd borrowed (except a shower stool/compact that we purchased). I was walking without any aid and range of motion is pretty good.

My problem is being unable to sleep. It's a race between falling asleep and feeling my right knee pain as it relaxes - sleep loses. I get some zzzz during the day in a chair or falling asleep after doing my 3x day exercises on the bed. If I do sleep in the bed, it's for an hour or 10 mins or 30 mins and I wake in pretty bad pain from having thrashed my legs around! Sitting up and standing relieves the pain at once. I'm better off not laying down.

But all is well and all will be well. Three more weeks and I can drive (yes! says Mrs Meade)

Actually she's the brave one. I was to do only one knee (Doctor advice) but lost the doctor in all these health carrier/org changes - and my new guy said it was up to me. Margaretta was all for it - and she knew what it would mean in terms of her taking on so much responsibility. So with her encouragement... and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't want to go through this process twice

Plus if you do both knees the insurance must cover inpatient critical rehab facility. Otherwise it's go home and good luck

Meade you need to get on the horn with your surgeon's office. They likely have suggestions for managing your lying down pain. I don't think what you describe is typical (but humans are really so different from each other under the skin, results vary greatly) and you need to make them aware. Applying heat or cold may help but I would ask them which is appropriate to your situation. Don't be a stubborn old fart who suffers in silence.

Yo MGM. All is not lost. If things don't work out there's always this solution. So you know, the trailer contains an air mattress and a chemical toilet. You'll never have a excuse to soil yourself.

I wish you speedy ambulation.

So you went through it all at once, twice. Very clever. But tougher on you. Although you should be used to not having a leg to stand on by now.

Sorry about the pain and sleeping issues. Have you tried a hospital bed? The raised back and knee thing might keep you from thrashing as much and getting your knees angrified.

Or how about a leaning board?

I d wish you well, but I m ignoring you.

if I wasn t ignoring you I would say, "hang in there, tiger!"

I would say...., "just pick one of my many outrageous posts, and lay into me. just divert the pain and frustration into destroying my logic, my assertions, my feeble intellect".

this I would do for you, meade, but alas, I am ignoring you.....

Thanks there, Ray. Unfortunately (1) a subscription is required to read the article. Unfortunately (2) one can read the potential bad news - but not anything else - without a subscription

Well now this is truly a first...

This has got to be the first time in nearly two decades of reading his posts that I've read something that rube wrote and thought, "Gee, I wish I'd come up with that"... :D
