First day of the new job

Post by Gob »

A US police officer has been shot and killed on her first day at work, the day after she was sworn in.

Ashley Guindon had been responding to a domestic dispute in Woodbridge, Virginia, about 32 km (20 miles) south of Washington, DC.

Two of her colleagues were also injured in the shooting and are in hospital, but no details have been released about their condition.

The suspect, an Army staff sergeant assigned to the Pentagon, was arrested.

Ronald Hamilton, 32, is being held without bail on charges that include murder of a law enforcement officer and first-degree murder, AP news agency reported.

He killed his wife then opened fire on officers as they approached, authorities said.

An unharmed 11 year-old child, reportedly the couple's son, was also in the house at the time of the incident, they added.

Guindon, 28, had been a former Marine Corps reservist and resigned during officer field training for personal reasons last year.

Saturday, though, was her first day back on shift in her new role.

I'm sorry, but on her very first day on the job, an officer is sent to respond to a domestic disturbance, among the most volatile situations a police officer could face, one that could (and did) go south in so many ways. And it was someone's boneheaded idea to assign this one to the new kid, before she has gained any real world experience to prepare her for such a situation.

Whether it would have made any difference to the outcome or not, whoever had this brainwave should be out of a job.

Given that two others officers were shot, I'm guessing she was within standard protocol of most PDs as a new officers riding along with two veterans to a domestic.

Sadly, domestics are a huge percentage of LEO calls. Domestics are also the leading cause of death for LEOs, they all know it every time they get a DV call-out. It doesn't matter if it's a rookie or a 30 year veteran officer, LEOs of any age/experience level run a very high risk of dying while trying to keep some asshole from murdering his/her spouse/children.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

And the perp is an active soldier yet. No salute, or thanks for serving, to our murderous veteran on this one.

Well, who knows? I'm going on the assumption that he is a scumbag, like all spousal abusers and killers, but who knows what might have happened over there to drive him over the edge and then come home to completely inadequate help to deal with it.

I hope that he is quickly apprehended and the full force of the justice system is brought to bear on the waster of oxygen who committed this heinous murder.

Yeah, sure.  I might as well also hope that unicorns are real and actually do crap rainbows.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
