My all-time favorite Oscars gown:

I agree.  It looks like a gown rather than a costume for a terpsichorean ecdysiast or a pole dancer.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Honestly I was kinda pissed, couldn't watch the show because Disney cops kept pulling it off the YouTube live stream and I guess the hackers finally gave up. Meantime have to wait another week for the Downton Abbey finale because of the stupid Oscars!

But that gown is simply divine . . . and of course the lovely Cate Blanchett is a pretty terrific model.

It has been something like 30 years since I actually cared enough to watch the Oscars. When the day is done, they aren't much more significant than a fart in the wind.

ACADEMY AWARDS 2016

Post by RayThom »

Two good things from last night's "celebrity back slap fest."

1.) Ennio Morricone finally won an Original Score award for The Hateful Eight. You don't know how wonderful this composer is until you hear Yo-Yo Ma's interpretations of his film scores.

2.) Lady Gaga's powerful performance of "Til It Happens to You" from the docu "The Hunting Ground." It left me trembling. There wasn't a dry eye in my head.

Nice to hear that there were a couple of worthwhile things amidst the self-congratulations and ill-informed political grandstanding.

I love the motion picture shows! And I love the actors who make me laugh, weep & think. They're shiny pretty people who look nice all dolled up and self-congratulatory. I admit, I've never missed a year entirely, though in recent years, I've only seen clips online - and I like to look at the dresses online, too. Although I am not normally interested in fashion, I like the Oscar gowns . . . because they are a zenith opportunity for designers, after all.

Until the last few years of its run, I'd seen every single year of the Jerry Lewis Telethon, too. My mother watched both religiously and I'm nothing if not my mother's daughter. :?

I watch it because I enjoy movies and like to see pieces of movies that I'm not as likely to see (like foreign films or documentaries), but this seems to be trimmed more and more every year (so they can do something uproariously funny like have the host order a pizza or sell girl scout cookies  ). FWIW, I appreciate the jobs the good actors and others do in creating movies, but I don't really care about them personally nor do I love watching them pat themselves on their collective backs. That being said, I do enjoy seeing some of them make complete asses of themselves without realizing they are doing so--and this is one of the things the Oscars show always gives us (and one of the main reasons I watch)--from overacting to create a supposedly heartfelt acceptance speech, to seeing them try to tie the award to their latest cause, I can always get a laugh out of it. It reminds me of when I watched a film made in the 70s about Idi Amin (called Idi Amin Dada) who controlled every frame of it, and came off looking like the ass he is/was. Trump does a lot of this as well. Self important people who get a soap box often do. and, IMHO, it makes the show worth a watch.

Not the same thing, Big RR, but this is one of my favorite Idi moments from way back...

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
