Identity Theft

Post by oldr_n_wsr »

Someone opened a bank account in my name. Thankfully the paperwork to complete it got mailed to my house. Got the bank shutting it down and have alerted exsperia and hte rest about it. The bank sent me some forms I have to fill out about the theft.
Had a situation about two years ago where someone tried to open an account in my name but they were not successful and I got that bank involved and filed reports with the credit companies and the local police.
Anyone have any experience with Lifelock the identity theft prevention company? I am thinking about signing up. $10/month is the rate they advertise.

Hope I find out who is doing this. They will regret it. :arg

My understanding is that your credit record (at least at the major credit bureaus) is locked and cannot be accessed by anyone (even if they have your social security number) without your consent (which can only be given by entering a code by email or text when anyone tries to access your information). Not sure if it works or not, but it is popular.

I haven't looked into this in a while but you can put a "freeze" on your credit report with each bureau and a "fraud alert" also. It doesn't cost anything. That should be enough to alert you to any further attempts to use your ID to apply for credit.

The most important thing I'd want to know is if someone got access to my SSN, birthdate, mother's maiden name etc.

I wonder if the application that was made included any of that info on it...?

Joe Guy--my understanding is freezing/thawing and fraud alerts it costs money unless you can show that you have been hacked. There may be exceptions, but it's like getting copies of credit reports--you don't get them for free unless you've been denied credit.

Uh, Big RR - for free you can get 3 credit reports each year from the three main agencies - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

I guess whether or not a fee is involved depends on the state you live in and your age or if you've had your ID stolen.

I haven't looked into this in a while but you can put a "freeze" on your credit report with each bureau and a "fraud alert" also.
The bank where the fraud took place alerted one of the credit report people and they alert the others. I have a case number for that and will check up on that. I know from the last time, when you alert/check up on the case, the credit report people try and sell you a monitoring/repair service.
120$ per year for what?
From what I know (only read the front page of their website) they constantly monitor your transactions and if something is amiss (like the attempted opening of an account/credit card or a transfer from one bank to another/etc) they contact you to see if it is legit (or maybe I can set up something like I have to let them know ahead of time if I am opening a new account or credit card or going for a loan).
On this transaction I was lucky as my real address was used. What if the bastard put in a different address and recieved the paper work to finish opening the account? I would not know about it at all.

I'll look into lifelock a little further as this is the second attempt at opening an account in my name (that I know of). :shrug Don't need this shit. :arg
Thanks all
