I am sure there is a great backstory on this particular random thought.Lord Jim wrote:Why do they lock the portable toilets at construction projects? Are they worried that there's something in there that somebody might want to steal?![]()

..or a great backup

Re: Home for Random Thoughts
I have an answer and a question.
Answer: It's locked because they keep a lot of their shit inside.
Question: How desperate do you have to be to discover that they lock portable toilets at construction sites?

Re: Home for Random Thoughts
I wonder if we will be privy to the tale.
Re: Home for Random Thoughts
Let me clarify...
I'm not talking about "construction sites" like some huge building project...
I have noticed just in taking walks around our neighborhood that where homeowners are having an addition put on, having a new exterior paint job done, a major roof repair, etc. that there is frequently a Porto-potty out next to the sidewalk and when the workers working on the project aren't there the toilets pad-locked...
I don't understand why they bother...
I'm not trolling construction sites checking out their Jiffy Johns...

Re: Home for Random Thoughts
Just for clarity... Jesus did not prescribe selling everything we have and giving the proceeds to the poor. He said that to one individual who claimed to have done everything necessary for salvation when (in fact) he had not - he did not realise that he was 100% attached to "things" and not to God. Jesus challenged him in his weakest spot. Given the truth, he could not handle it and walked away - going in the opposite direction to the Way.

My guess is they want to prevent unauthorized poop droppings. A toilet that's open to the public is going to get dirty real fast.
And of course in San Francisco you always have the added potential possibility of perverted people pleasuring their plump perpendicular penises in a porta-potty.

I didn't notice that before,BoSoxGal wrote:This is my new bed, that I picked up last Monday at IKEA. It sat inside my car until Saturday morning what with all the breaking down and being exhausted last week. I finally got it put together and slept in it last night for the first time.

It's a picture from the IKEA catalog, not of my actual bed. However, looks like ribbons to me and I did use my four bedposts as a place to display my prettiest scarves. Who knows, maybe someday they'll serve a dual purpose?

Downtown, I can see that...(especially since the city has done such an incredibly poor job providing public toilets...)My guess is they want to prevent unauthorized poop droppings. A toilet that's open to the public is going to get dirty real fast.
Or a homeless person might take up residence...or a prostitute or drug dealer might use it as a business location...
But these are not big issues out in our suburban neck of the woods...

Mostly to avoid vandalism. Kids stealing the roll. Kids throwing cherry bombs in the tank.
An aside....
When I was in Egypt doing waterside security for US Naval cargo ships post 9/11 the Egyptians provided us with Western-style porta potties. That was nice of them, they even did maintenance on them daily.
Basically pumped them out, hosed them down, and installed a single roll of toilet paper. The roll was about 1/3 the quantity of your typical roll here in the States.
Every morning, there's be a line of guys waiting for the cleaners to finish, because within a half hour there wouldn't be a scrap of toilet paper left in any of the units until the next service. Sometimes the first guy in would steal the roll.
Me, I brought my own (we actually had been advised to by the first guys in country) and carried one in my gas mask everywhere I went. By the end of the deployment (and knowing I still had a reserve being I'd brought 8 rolls) I sold a couple rolls.

I do the same thing on my bicycle rides; there's always a little travel pack of Kleenex in my handlebar bag for just that reason.datsunaholic wrote:Lord Jim wrote: Downtown, I can see that...(especially since the city has done such an incredibly poor job providing public toilets...)

There have also been times when I've had to make use of a cathole latrine in a cornfield, and the little package of Kleenex comes in very useful there as well.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

So tell me more about the Ikea bed. Does it take readily available, standard sized sheets and blankets? My spouse and I make regular pilgrimages to an Ikea store North of Baltimore. She can wander around there for hours while I sit in the restaurant sipping pretty good coffee and eventually we take a cheap meal of meatballs and lingonberries.
But my impression of the bedroom and kitchen stuff was that they were dimensioned in a manner that meant standard American stuff would not fit.

We will finally get an IKEA in Indy. No more long drives to Cincinnati to walk endlessly and buy absolutely nothing. Well, we bought lunch so I suppose that counts.
Your bed is pretty but I hate foot-boards. Tall people issue I suppose.

Last night I dreamed (is nightmared a word?) that Trump was my father. I awoke from it as I fell out of bed and hit the floor.

It's standard sizing for twin, full, queen, king. Some of their actual bedding is not, because they combine full/queen on sheets/duvets/duvet covers, which means it's smaller than a standard queen. My bedding is from LL Bean, I got a great deal at the outlet store so got very high quality sheets/duvet cover made in Portugal that I could never otherwise afford - but it should last me until I'm old and gray and if it doesn't, LL Bean will replace it for me. I LOVE being back near a LL Bean outlet store!Burning Petard wrote:So tell me more about the Ikea bed. Does it take readily available, standard sized sheets and blankets? My first experience with IKEA was furnishing my entire apartment in Fall River, MA for less than $1400 - that time I got a full size bed because I had a tiny bedroom, and it didn't have a footboard which was fine.
Because I'm short I don't mind the footboard and in a small space with limited storage, the footboard comes in handy as a place to drape throw blankets, cardigans, etc. I'm perfecting the art of storage in a small space with lots of over the door hangers, under the bed storage boxes, etc. IKEA is terrific for this, because they design for the smaller spaces that Europeans are used to living in, where maximizing storage space is very important. Their beds either have built-in storage, or like mine, are made to accommodate under-the-bed storage boxes that they sell separately - super cheaply!
I love IKEA and am excited to live near one again, although I won't need to buy much more given that I'm in just a bedroom now and don't have a house to furnish - although the farmhouse is furnished beautifully and I'm so grateful to have found such a terrific place to live, where I get to enjoy all the amenities with none of the repair/maintenance obligations, lol.
The other store I really love that I'm glad to be near again is Trader Joe's - there's one right on the way to my cousin's in MA, so I can visit and stock up on my favorite stuff once a month. YAY!

I hate the phrases "no brainer" and "mind blown". They seem to be the sayings of choice in comercials lately.
And, I went to an Ikea once. Never again. Didn't like their stuff and really hated the "floor plan" (aka maze).
